The Kuran Buzan valley is a long and narrow valley located in Central Zagros mountainous region comprising the eastern parts of modern Luristan as well as the north eastern parts of Ilam provinces. The environment of valley and the flow of Seymareh River in the center of valley have given potentially the valley an ideal space attracting the human colonies from the very early times through nowadays. Locating the real sequences of human occupations and their distributions across the valley، a systematic archaeological survey of the area have conducted in spring 2010. Since the dam construction in the area seemed to have threatened the archaeological sites and also because of the topography of the valley which would obscured the sites appearances، a full coverage and intensive gridded system of survey was applied to enhance the probability of finding not only the actual locations of sites but rather off-site material which were assumed to be distributed all around the valley. Applying such technique in an area about 71 km2، we were able to explore some 110 Paleolithic sites as well as some sites from the various cultural periods (2 sites as Neolithic، 1 site as Chalcolithic; 2 sites as Bronze Age، 7 sites belong to the historical period and 7 to the Islamic era). These، are including Paleolithic open sites، Neolithic open sites، Chalcolithic and Bronze Age settlement، 1 historical fortress، some historic sites with distribution of pottery، a watermill، a channel and a cemetery from Islamic period. Sites could be attributed to the Lower (3 sites) and Middle Paleolithic (107 sites) while we could not identified the Upper Paleolithic/Epi-paleolithic episodes yet. This could be attributed to the geophysical patterns of the area where many natural cherty outcrops (Amirn formation) and some other raw material are easy to access on the surface made it possible the Paleolithic stone tool makers were able to use. The assemblages are consisted of Acheulian bifacial as well as large chopping tools، cores، scrapers and other Lower Paleolithic tool types as well as including a variety of the Middle Paleolithic industry such as large tools were generally made by the Levallois techniques. Considering the spatial pattern of sites and studying the distribution frequency of tools and their technological characteristics may applied that the Kuran Buzan valley attracted the different groups of Pleistocene’s hunter-gatherer; as the availability of resources could reinforced the living struggles of populations. During the later periods which plant cultivations become dominant، the only way of life in the region، the shortage of accessible lands which were restricted just to the patchy alluvial terraces of the Seymareh River banks prevented the valley being occupied by the farmer societies. Through this research we found that the geographical location of Kuran Buzan valley which is linked to the known Paleolithic areas in the north to Kermanshah، Mahidasht and Sarfirouzabad as well as to Hulailan in the west and to Kuhdasht in the east may account for existence of a networking system through which the Kuran Buzan tool makers were interacted technologically with their peripheral neighbors.

One of the ways in which life-histories of formal stone tools could be studied is taking advantage of analyses of diverse retouched edge types، patterns of the retouch، its relative continuity and intensity، and mass/volume loss during retouching process. Study of retouch could provide new insights into the reconstruction of subsistence strategies of ancient societies، intensity of activities، technological organization and so forth. Several episodes of edge retouching processes (for making tools، rejuvenating its edges، resharpening، etc) gradually reduce the basic volume/mass of blanks and tools. Therefore، gradual and progressive decline in stone tool’s volume/mass is the fundamental element of the reduction thesis. Reduction thesis states that lithic’s size and shape will change -due to the human activities- from acquisition of raw materials to discard، and this continuous transformation is always in the form of stone tool’s weight/mass loss. In this research، the main focus is on the concept of reduction/retouch intensity on unifacially retouched tools (URTs) recovered from Komishān cave، a prehistoric site located at the southeastern shore of the Caspian Sea. This site is a karstic cave in the northern foothills of the Huto-kash Mountains، a subset of Alborz Mountains. Lithic assemblages of the cave suggest a broad spectrum of activities were performed by its prehistoric inhabitants. Almost 10 types of tools identified among the stone artifacts. The URTs recovered from 2009 excavation of the cave are subjects of this study. These URTs belong to both disturbed and in situ layers. Totally، they add up to 43 pieces in which، 1-30 belong to the disturbed layers and 31-43 associated with in situ (and lower) layers. The most obvious characteristic of Komishān cave assemblages is the abundance of backed pieces with considerable proportion (pieces with retouched edge angles higher than 70° constitute %25. 6 of the assemblage. This kind of steep edge is generally called backed edges). Stone artifacts of Komishān generally made on large blanks، suggesting a local accessibility to high quality raw materials. In addition to that، absence of any kinds of uniformity or standardization among the URT assemblage might indicate easy access to the high quality raw materials. In this research، at first، the reduction/retouch intensity of the URTs was calculated، and then tried to relate this relative intensity to probable site function and use during the Mesolithic Age. The method used here is based on geometric and mathematical calculations، and in this regard، authors took advantage of the three geometric reduction indices that are IR، II and ERP. The IR، II، and ERP values probably indicate the variable nature of reduction، so it seems these three indices are complementary to each other، and using the tri-index approach in which each of these indices is getting involved، one can understand about relative reduction/retouch intensity of individual stone tools or lithic assemblages in a given prehistoric site. In sum، the results indicate that reduction/retouch intensity of Komishān’s URTs is almost moderate، and significant volume loss along the URT’s lateral edges is probably an outcome of uncontrolled percussion retouching and not due to the continuous story of dulling and resharpening. Considering the fact that inhabitants of Komishān cave had access to the high quality raw materials، such reduction strategy might be expected. There are some evidences that suggest Komishān cave was most likely a base camp with long-term occupation at the periphery of the site (low mobility). Among these are the evenness index، the specific ecoregion of the southern shore of the Caspian Sea (rich ecoregion)، faunal remains، and reduction/retouch values.

Due to exciting discovery of major Bronze Age urban centers in southeastern Iran، such as Shahre Sukhte، Shahdad and Konar Sandal (Jiroft) in Kerman province، most scholarly attention has been given to the 3rd millennium BC. As a result، the cultures preceding the Bronze Age in particular the 4th millennium BC have been often neglected. In early 2011، the Iranian Center of Heritage، Handicraft and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO) of Kerman Province conducted a rescue excavation at Khaje Askar cemetery near the city of Bam، in which several graves and complete funerary vessels were discovered (about 15 graves had been bulldozed previously). Khaje askar cemetery is located on the east bank of Chelleh Khane River in the Bam plain. From the construction activities 14 complete potteries and some bone fragments were found which proved the existence of a cemetery so the construction activities were postponed and a rescue excavation was conducted by a team of archaeologists of ICHITO under the supervision of Nader Alidadi Soleimani. As a result of the excavations 9 graves and 53 funerary goods were uncovered; the burial goods included ceramics، stone and clay beads، stone vessels، shells and a unique metal arrowhead. In addition to the damages of construction activities، existence of a channel (70 cm wide and 1 m deep) through the eastern part of the hill had caused so many damages to the cemetery especially grave 105 which was barely recognizable. In khaje askar cemetery 7 trenches named A-G were opened which covered 460 square meters of the hill. 9 graves were uncovered from the trenches of eastern part of the hill. They were labelled from 101 to 109. The aim of the rescue excavations at Khaje Askar was to identify the intact graves and to liberate the parts of natural hill on which the cemetery was located. according to the landlords during the construction activities 15 graves had been bulldozed in the west side of the natural hill. All the graves found through excavations were in the eastern part of the hill. The interesting point is that no graves were discovered in the southern part of the site. According to the comparative chronology done based on the ceramics of the excavated settlement sites of southeastern Iran and Pakistan such as Tall e Iblis، Mahtootabad، Mehrgareh and Shahi tumb، Khaje Askar cemetery belongs to the Aliabad culture (Iblis IV) and goes back to 4th millennium BC. The comparative analysis of the ceramic assemblage and other items as well of khaje Askar cemetery، suggest the date of 4th millennium BC (Aliabad culture) and shows that the cemetery was a single period site. There are many third millennium excavated cemeteries in southeastern Iran such as Shahr-e Sukhte (tosi، Sajjadi)، Shahdad (Hakemi 1977)، Mahtoot abad (Majidzade 2008)، Kenaroo Esfandaghe (Rahbar 1376)، khoorab (Stein 1937)، Rameshk (Choobak 1383)، which prove that using of cemeteries was frequent in this period and give us some information about the burial patterns. But not until the excavations of Khaje Askar no cemetery belonging to 4th millennium had been found in southeastern Iran. So we suggest that the culture of using cemeteries dates back to the 4th millennium BC in southeast of Iran. In this article، we state the results of excavations at Khaje Askar cemetery and describe the burials and funerary goods and according to a comparative analysis based on the ceramics of other excavated settlement sites of southeastern Iran and Pakistan such as Tal- e Iblis، Mahtot abad، Meh rgarh and Shahi Tump، we argue that Khaje Askar cemetery belongs to the Aliabad culture (Iblis IV) and dates to the 4th millennium BC.

The chronology of Northwestern Iran is mainly based on the results of some sites located around Lake Uremia; while the northwestern Iran has various geographical landscapes، including pastures، mountains، and less-watered plains. The climate and vegetation had great impact on the life of people in this area. These impacts are more visible on the societies of the Late Bronze age and Iron Age of this small oasis. Qalla Khosrow is one of these sites located some 30 kilometers North-West of the Ardabil city. The fortress stands on a rocky hill، some 1395 meters above the sea level، on the left bank of the Ghara-su River; the river has restricted the site in north، northwest and east directions as flowing close to fortress structures with high steep. In addition to the vast natural obstacles، of the main advantages of the Qalla Khosrow is its location on the Ardabil- Meshgin Shahr ancient road. The extent of Qalla Khosrow including settlement and cemetery overall is more than 300 hectares in area while the fortress itself is about 20 hectares. According to the Archaeological evidences، the cultural features of the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age I in east of northwestern Iran have considerable differences with Lake Uremia basin. This diversity in settlement patterns and common cultures of given zones is depend on the dominant Geographical conditions of each zone. However، the Late Bronze Age of the Lake Uremia Basin is known as Uremia and Khabur Ware، but the most striking feature of the Settlement Patterns in the Late Bronze Age in eastern areas of the northwest of Iran -the Ardabil Plain- is living within castles which have been made with stone alignment without mortar on top of the hill and from one or two directions have preserved by natural features. Regarding to their function، notability and some other factors the castles of this period can be classified to various types. Of the most striking features of these settlements is a large castle in center as a central fortress surrounding by several smaller peripheral fortresses. In this model، the fortress such as Qalla Khosrow has been as central and the fortresses such as Zino، Shindir shami، Kichik Yurdi، Sheytan Dashi، Gol Nesa and Yeri castle peripheral fortresses having pattern. These citadels are not big and their expansion are 1 to 2 hectare in area. It seems that in Late Bronze Age of the region a network of fortified citadel around the central fortresses like Qalla Khosrow is visible. Of the physical characters of the central fortress to contain a cemetery with Megalithic graves. The peripheral fortresses are small in size and area and there are some graveyards Cist tombs around them. It seems that these castles had military function and have built to protect the boundary and pasture of central fortresses and as a military station guarding the Ardabil plain from the north.

As a part of the Kouhrang Dam construction project and its third tunnel in Birgan، Kouhrang، (Chaharmahal O Bakhtiari) a salvage archaeological survey was carried out documenting the potential of archaeological remains within its reservoir and the tunnel. Most of the recorded are nomadic camps. Aiming to rescue، a proposal was submitted for excavations at the most important of the identified sites; as in 2008 the excavations were carried out. One of the excavated sites، i. e. Shahriyari 2، is situated 1 km west of the Shahriyari village in Birgan region، Kouhrang County، Chaharmahal o Bakhtiari Province، is the subject of the present paper. Excavations exposed some irregular plans of architectural remains. Understand this features was firstly difficult، but the parallel ethnological studies on the villages and the current seasonal camps lying within the studying area was helpful to shed light on the darkness of the ambiguous material. Finally، it has revealed that during the Achamenid period the region was prepare land for nomadic people as being used currently. Besides presenting a brief report on the excavation، the present paper trying to describe the results of comparative study of the ceramics، which allowed us to propose the chronology of material. Having analysis of the recovered potteries it become clear that the Shahriyari 2 chronologically attributed to the Achamenid period، and the material could be compare to most contemporaneous sites particularly Persepolis، Chogha Mish and Susa. On the other hand، ethnoarchaeology studies on the architecture of modern nomadic camps، proved that this architectural type with some changes، is compatible with the results obtained at the excavated Achamenid settlements had continued to nowadays. The site of Shahriyari 2 located at the height of 200m on the southern slope of the natural mound of Maleh or Mazeh (in local name meaning mound and plain، respectively). The mound itself is almost 300m high، with an elevation 2291meters above sea level located at zone 39S N: 3570282، E: 0429937 UTM. Kouhrang County، where the site is located، marks the most mountainous quarter of the province، and lies at its northern end of the province. Here، is divided into two Central and Bazoft Districts، separated by Zard-kuh Mountains. Kouhrang is restricted by Isfahan Province to the north، Luristan Province to the northwest، Khuzestan Province to the west، the Central District of Ardal County to the south، and Shahr-e Kurd and Farsan Counties to the east. The landscape is characterized by the intense mountains. Pottery comparisons suggest Shahriyari 2 as an Achamenid settlement. Also، the architectural remains discovered at this nomadic site share several similarities with the modern settlements of the region in type of building، plan and structure. Comparison between the pottery assemblage from Shahriyari 2 and the material from lowland sites in Fars and Khuzestan has proved the strong interactions between Kouhrang nomads and these regions. However، further archaeological fieldwork is needed to determine whether these ancient pastoralists wintered only in Fars or Khuzestan، or moved to both regions to spend the cold season; similar interactions have continued nowadays، with Khuzestan particularly. Comparative analysis of the potteries from Shahriyari 2 suggests a date in Achamenid period. So، Shahriyari 2 falls in the same chronological horizon with Persepolis، Chogha Mish (Levels 4-5) and Susa (Ville Royale II).

Pottery is the most important and abundant cultural material of the archeological sites enjoying enormous importance; as large numbers of historical chronologies are based on potteries and its typological comparisons. As such، in terms of structural properties، the pottery identification of each period and region is one of the fundamental aspects of archeological studies. The historical pottery unlike prehistoric one has noticeable decrease in decoration meanwhile the other decorations techniques such as slipping were not common (Regardless of the Sassanid dynasty glazed pottery، quantities are negligible) and these potteries has special complexity as we need more broad studies to be done on the various regions. Regarding to the presence of local styles during the Parthian period as a longest period of the ancient Iranian kingdoms، the potteries have special importance; in other words، diverse pottery types in different regions are indicator of a particular style and advancement of the given period. One of the specific Parthian pottery samples of Sistan region is burnished pottery which has special quality and elegance and is rarely known from other Iranian parts. This pottery type has desirable quality both in its manufacturing phase and the firing process. The Parthian burnished wares are the most elegant and luxurious in the east، especially in Sistan rarely noticed by apart researches. Regarding to the importance of Sistan burnished ware in archeology of the region and its role in the chronology of the Parthian era، this article is trying to study this particular type of pottery of Sistan، its formation process and time-domain spreading، transition and its impact on neighboring areas. Here، the authors are trying to review the studies on the Parthian era Sistan burnished ware apart from complete introduction of this pottery type، to focus on its regional dispersion. The Sistan burnished wares are enjoying much desirable condition in terms of their quality. Most of them are wheel-made with suitable firing and the fabric compaction is high as there is no visible porosity. Burnished designs often applied with horizontal lines on both sides of potteries whose place depends on its function; burnished lines with irregular vertical، irregular horizontal، mixed or zigzag lines as well as in geometrical forms were applied. The potters have applied these decorations on variety of pottery types and forms، such as pitcher، cup and bowl. All given types have burnished both sides of bowls which is mainly cross and regular lines. Although pottery cannot be the only indicator of social hierarchy in a region، but the existence of Burnished ware on the most important sites of Sistan area could shed light on this truth that this type of pottery have produced by experts at the most important sites of Sistan having luxury aspects. Typological comparisons were also found that this type of pottery in the central and western areas of Afghanistan during the Kvshanyan mandatory has been very common.

Following the report of the local fishermen to the Boushehr Cultural Heritage Organization on existence of pot-sherds discovered from the seabed; in winter 2001 and 2003 the Underwater Archaeology Research Group of the Iranian center archaeological for Research attempted to have scientific diving aiming to study and identify the remains. The underwater operation was an square kilometer in area and the archaeological survey was conducted by survey divers. The area is located some thirty miles south of Bandar-e Rig and three kilometers into the coastline at a depth of five to eight meters. The underwater archaeological studies of Bandar-e Rig shore (Ganaveh) of Persian Gulf، lead us to identify some cultural material including Turpedo jars، small and large water storage pottery، weapons such as helmets، armor and elbow-protectors and scattered pot-sherds. Among the cultural finds، a few complete Turpedo jars and more sherds was discovered. This type of pottery which is dated to the Parthian and Late Sassanid periods till the end of the first two centuries of Islamic period Persian Gulf maritime trade have been used for valuable liquids such as olive oil، fish، salt، wine، and sometimes carrying grain from Iranian on the Persian Gulf coasts، Arabic، Indian Subcontinent، East Asia and East Africa while had a tiny interior mortar of natural bitumen being waterproof. The main motivations for diving operations was to determine the true nature of the historical and archaeological dating which Led to discover the ship’s shipment dated back to the Sassanid period. Turpedo pottery from the Bandar-e Rig has a dark buff past and many of its fragments have identified via the stratigraphy of Bandar-e Mahrouyan which is the same with greenish buff or grayish green fabric and at the outer edge of the shoulder with decorative grooves. According to C14 dating، Turpedo jars of the Mahrouyan are related to the Late Sassanid period. Except Turpedo pottery، some fragments of turquoise pottery were also recorded. Bandar-e Hezarmardan and Shaghab cemetery locating in the Boushehr Peninsula have attested some of these sherds. In the Sassanid cemetery of Shaghab along with different types of Sassanid burials، this pottery has also been used as a burial Jar. At the Sassanid port of Boushehr peninsula called Reyshahr، the Turpedo pottery were also occurred. At a port around Boushehr، the place locally called Jalali، there are some sherds and complete vessels of Turpedo have identified by local fishermen and researchers. Turpedo pottery of Jalali coast are comparable with Bandar-e Rig samples. At Siraf and in the lowest layer of the Sassanid remains the torpedo pottery with buff and brown fabric is identified. In the deep water of Siraf the Turpedo pottery is discovered in a sunk ship. Bandar-e Nay band along the coastline of Siraf eastward the dispersion of Turpedo pottery is also attested. Other places، such as Mianab plain، Susa and Gelalak، there are good examples of Turpedo pottery; all belong to the Parthian period. This pottery is in the southern coast of the Persian Gulf، East Africa and India has also been reported.

Due to the geographic advantages، the extent region in center of Asia including northeastern Iran and northern Afghanistan has been attracted the populations since the first immigrations date to the 3rd millennium B. C. The region was traditionally defined as the great Khorassan was expanding from Transoxiana and Khwarezm in the north to Quhistan and Sistan in the south and from Pamir and Kashmir in the east to Qumes and Rayy in the west. Khorassan was situated on the chief route of Asia، Silk Road and was enjoying fertile plains and temperate climate. The favorable conditions of Khorassan have caused to formation settlements and to attract nomads who was migrating in central Asia in order to achieve a better living condition. Their arrival to Khorassan was sometimes associated with cruelly invasions. According to the historical reports، the first military contact between Persian kingdom and the invaders of northeastern Iran occurred in the reign of Cyrus the great in the 6th Century BC. The invasions from northeastern Iran continued during the reign of Seleucids and Arsacids and culminated by raids of Huns and Hephthalites in Sassanid era. The various groups of invaders including the tribes of Ghuzz، Seljuk، Mongol، Uzbek and Turkmen attacked northeastern Iran from the 7th to 20th Century. However، because of the physiographic conditions of northeastern Iran، it was not easily possible to access fertile plains and pastures of central Khorassan for many groups of northern nomads and invaders. The major natural barrier was a wall-like range in northeastern Iran named Kopet Dagh Mountains. The Kopet Dagh with an altitude of about 3000 meters above sea level in the highest point provides a natural wall extended from the east to the west of Khorassan. Nevertheless morphological attributes such as gorges and passes make some passageways across the Kopet Dagh range. Crossing the Kopet Dagh moreover is possible through the eroded ridges. The traversable locations were controlled by defensive installations. An important type of the installations was the defensive walls restricting entrance to Khorassan and preventing sudden attacks to settlements called here the Defensive Walls of Khorasan. The defensive walls of Khorassan includes some disperse walls located in gorges and cols of the Kopet Dagh in Aq-Darband، Mozdouran and Kalat. The aforementioned geographical conditions were extended to the other regions of Asia causing the populations of southern Asia to construct some similar walls along northern borders including the Great Wall of China، the walls of Central Asia، the Gorgan wall، and the Derbent wall، from east to west. The conclusions demonstrate the strongly correlation between geographical position of the defensive walls and geographical landscape of Asia. The continuous terrain features including high mountains and deep seas provide an impenetrable barrier which separate the cultivator societies of southern from nomadic groups of northern Asia. Everywhere the natural barrier was passable the architectural walls such as the defensive walls of Khorassan، Gorgan، Derbent and China were been constructed. However، a wall composed of physiographical features and architectural structures was stretched from Black Sea in the west to Yellow Sea in the east of Asia. The wall is introduced as The Long Wall of Asia and described in present paper for the first time. The Long Wall of Asia including the defensive walls of Khorassan with a total length of more than 11،000 kilometers demonstrate clearly the interaction between humans and the environment along history.

One of the most important problems on the city of Yazd in the early Islamic period، is the silent geographical and historical resources. Because when texts dealing with Yazd region، they are mentioned Naein، Meybod، Kasah and Fahraj as four major cities of this region which had jame mosque، but they are not called the city of Yazd. This has caused that many researchers called the city of Yazd as Kasah and after several centuries Yazd has replaced. Based on a careful study of the geographical texts، can we know the city of Yazd? This is the first studying question posed in this article. Second question is about Kasah city. Is Kasha the same with city of Yazd? Although geographical texts are silent about city of Yazd، but we can find signs about this city in the early Islamic period. When geographical texts speak of Kasah، they refer to a city located on the suburbs. The river run through the described city which originated from a mountain village. The village، also had a lead mine. The village has good weather and the fruit trees. This city has a castle with two jame mosque and its water source was from qanat. If we adapt these descriptions with geographical conditions of Yazd – Ardakan plain، we can understand the existence of city of Yazd. Because Taft river is the only river of yazd – ardakan plain which after passing through the city of Taft، flows through the city of Yazd. Moreover، Taft had a lead mine which is not used about twenty years. The local texts mentioned that Yazd was composed of several communities like Fahadan، Kooshk - e - no and was conquered by the Muslims in the early Islamic period. The archaeological excavations carried out on the historical context of city of Yazd، potteries which were found and are dating the 3rd to 5th centuries AH. These potteries consists of splashed and sgraffito decorated potteries. Splashed wares have buff fabric covered with white or buff slip. Their shapes including bowls، dishes and cups and splashed with green، brown and yellow slip and glaze. This kind of pottery is comparable with some peripheral sites like Ghubayrā، Kerman. Sgraffito wares، like splashed wares، have buff fabric covered with white or buff slip. Their shapes including bowls، dishes and cups. Designs incised through a white slip under a yellowish transparent glaze، splashed with green، brown and yellow. Mashhad-i Davazdah Imam was built by Abu Saeed and Abu Ya’ghoub، both military governors of Kakuyid ruler Ala-al Doleh Faramarz. Its inscription has 429 AH dating and has become the oldest monument of the city of Yazd. Also، the local texts said that Imam Reza prayed in the Fort mosque in Daro al-Shfa community، which has built a monastery memorizing his presence later on during Safavid period. These reasons shows that the city of Yazd existed in the early Islamic period. When Muslim geographers speak about Kasah، they said this city composed of several villages which city of Yazd was located on its suburbs. For this reason، it cannot be said a city. On the other hand، the local text said this city was founded by Alexander the Great after conquering the Achamenid Empire and prisoners accommodated in. After construction of the city of Yazd، people left Kasah and settled in Yazd; while On the basis of geographical texts like Masalik al-mamalik or Suwar al-aqālīm، Kasah is an Islamic city in Yazd region. These are existing contradictions between the local text and geographical. Perhaps rostagh dehestan is the same Kasah، because this dehestan composed of several villages dates back from early Islamic period and is consistent with the descriptions of geographers from Kasah.

The formation of the modern city of Khorram-Abad، as a center of Luristan province in the western Iran، dates back to the middle Islamic period (probably 5-7 A. H). The formation and development process of the city has affected by the appropriate environmental and ecological conditions. Khorram-Abad has suitable conditions for human population from the prehistoric period through modern time. The major factors shaping the settlement and development of the region are suitable transport location as well as natural and geographical factors such as water resources، especially rivers crossing the city such as Karganeh and Khorram-Abad rivers. Before the modern formation of the Khorram Abad was a town، named Shapur-Khast backed to Sassanid the Early Islamic periods. It seems that Shapur-khast has been abandoned at the 7 or 8 A. H and Khorram-Abad flourished as the central town of the region. What we certainly know is that the core of the modern city of Khorram-Abad has been founded at the western side of Falak-ol-Aflak castle. The earliest maps of the historic plan of the town، about the 1270 A. H، are produced by Russian surveyors. The present article is dealing with this map and aerial photos at the 1956 and 1969، the initial scope of the study and development of Khorram-Abad from the Safavid to the Pahlavi periods using data from GIS software and analysis. The most important studies in this area have been carried out by local researchers. Of course some researchers have done to Khorram-Abad valley field study by foreigners such as Sir Hennery Rawlinson. As there are not much researches on the Islamic city of Khorram-Abad and urban development from inception to nowadays we will try to use archaeological evidence، images with texture maps and city information from GIS aiming to provide suitable information about the context of the current city of Khorram-Abad. Based on archaeological evidence، the center of modern city of Khorram-Abad and the initial core of the city in the Safavid period were determined. Valuable monuments and inscriptions of the Safavid period has been remained in Khorram-Abad which on based the initial core of the city in the Safavid period was determined. The city boundaries in the Qajar and Pahlavi era have been identified according to 1270 A. H map and aerial photographs of 1956 and 1969. It was the culmination of a period of prosperity and urban development and what factors have led to physical development in various aspects of the other objectives of this research. The present study is based on written sources and field work in the context of the old town and the exploration of the related maps، urban development has taken place. Accordingly، the summit of the development of Khorram-Abad has been the Safavid and Pahlavi periods lying at the middle of north to south transportation routes and its selection as the center of Luristan province at the Pahlavi period as well، are the most important factors in the development of the city; particularly in north and south directions. The existence of the Zagros mountain in the east and west sides of the city as a limiting factor and also the flat land and fertile southern city is leading to physical development at the north and south directions. The result of this research shows that the reason of existence of Khorram-Abad and its foremost function and its extension are the geographic and climatic conditions and central location and its relationship to the city is because this region is a crossroads from West to East and North to South

Persia with its special geographical position has been continually subjected by invasions، battles and campaigns. The study of castles and defense fortifications of Iran in any period or place gives valuable information about the fortification system. The study of architectural remains in Shahdad as castle-villages or just castle has provided an important context for archaeological research. During systematic reviewing archaeological survey of Shahdad zone in 2011، 19 castles and defense fortifications were identified in the Lut desert and none of them has been studied yet. Based on the number and diversity of these structures، the discussion about these structures seems to be essential. Accordingly، the present study is trying to evaluate the role of these castles in military، defense affairs and regional security. The result of this study shows that these structures have also played a decisive role in the political developments of the region and had new functions and numerous species which could put them besides other important building. So، the formation of the core of Shahdad town has been Kohneh castle of Shahdad. Also، due to the insecurity Lut desert margins، the status of strategic Shahdad town and its location on the Kerman Khorassan road، significant potential for castles and defenses can be highly considered for the region. Later on، sometimes these castles have been repaired and reused. Due to excessive damages، it has been rebuilt and newly retitled. However، the building history of these castles is unknown as they have been used for several periods; sometimes (for example، Choqoki castle and Kohneh castle of shahdad) or was built a new castle beside the older castle، so that precise dating of castles is difficult. Currently، some castles are safe and some are ruin and in some areas the only sign of life from the past is ruin. By the Qajar period the Kerman and Shahdad areas were much more noted as from the construction or repair of older castles of Shahdad area is clearly evident. In Islamic castles of Shahdad the advances، in terms of the war، both for invaders and defenders have occurred which the bigger circular towers are built with less space and the walls are made more stronger. These castles have built with all necessary predictions to stop or slow down the invaders speed outside the castle walls and inside. The style of castle building has strong relationship with the security situation at the establishment time. Generally، the castles of Shahdad have been reminiscent chaos and marauding in Lut plain. The other results showed that in Shahdad and its surrounding rural areas residential complex are surrounded by the wall gradually developed and in the systematic structure form of a town or village، their condition has stabilized. In such cases، from city or early village has remain there are no traces or their ruins has remained in the center or near the present city. For example، in addition to the Kohneh castle of Shahdad، the Keshit castle located in Golbaf and Dehsaif castle can be mentioned. Other castles of Shahdad in terms of design and function are comparable with some castles within and outside of Kerman and central areas of Iran. The appleid method in this study achieving above objectives is archaeological systematic review and the analysis of data; finally، the results of performed publications about defensive and strongholds fortifications have been notified.
