When the melt is in the nonprotective atmosphere, Oxidation of alloys containing non-noble metals mainly results in a solid film formation on the melt surface. Formation of the film either in the melting stage or in the melt movement stage into the mould, i.e. casting stage is possible. Solid oxide films seem to be one of the main reasons for porosities and they decline the reliability of the castings. In this study, with air blowing into the bulk of melt during pouring process and formation of oxide-metal-oxide sandwich, characteristics of surface oxide films in casting stage by OMO sandwich method have been investigated through SEM and EDS. To form bubbles, air was blown at 0.12 MPa into the melt and with the formation of OMO sandwich between two or more bubbles, process was stopped. Results show that thickness of short time oxide films in ZA27 alloy change in the range of 30-150nm. Possible consequences of the characteristics of the oxide films are discussed.

In this paper, ZX51-xAl2O3 (x=0, 2.25, 4.5, and 6.75 vol%) magnesium matrix composites were fabricated by stir casting and then were hot extruded at 300, 350, and 400°C. After precise measuring of density based on Archimedes’ principle, physical properties of produced composites including apparent density, relative density, and volume percentage of porosity were investigated and also were statistically analyzed with the aid of Regression. The results showed that the apparent density and volume percentage of the porosity increase linearly and quadratically respectively for both the as-cast and extruded composites, while the relative density of the composites decreases by a second-order polynomial function when the amount of particle reinforcements increases. However, for all volume percentages of the reinforcement, the apparent and relative densities of the extruded composites were higher than those of the as-cast counterparts. In contrast, an opposite behaviour was observed for volume percentage of porosity; indicating of decreasing porosity content in consequence of extrusion processing. Contrary to serious effects of alumina particles volume percentage, physical properties of the extruded composites seemingly behaved independent of extrusion temperature.

In this paper the influence of green density in shaping and microstructure of sintered specimens was studied. Cu-10Sn-10Pb samples were compacted in 400MPa and 100MPa and were sintered at the range of 890-970°C for 20 min. The in situ images from the samples for measuring dimensional changes were taken at various sintering temperatures. It is concluded that 100MPa compacted samples have less distortion due to low liquid phase formation and keep their shape even at higher temperatures. In these samples, less contact between the solid particles has been caused low liquid phase formation. In this condition, fragmentation and then rearrangement of bronze particles as main and effective factors of densification are occurred. Moreover, liquid phase of lead which is formed in the microstructure has less diffusion through to the grain boundaries and preventing more distortion. For these reasons elephant foot phenomenon was not appeared in 100 MPa compact even at high temperatures.

In this study, of titanium effect on the fracture toughness and resistance to abrasion of Hadfield steel was investigated. For this purpose, 3 blocks were cast from Hadfield steel (without Ti addition, containing 0.5% Ti and 1% Ti) by using coreless induction furnace. After the casting, all blocks austenitized in 1100°C for 2 hours and immediately quenched in the pure water. In the next step, uniaxial tensile, abrasion by pin-on-disk method, hardness measuring by vickers method and charpy impact tests were applied on them. To evaluation of the microstructures was conducted by optical metallography and the fractured surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy. To evaluate the fracture toughness of the specimens, the results of charpy impact test and fracture toughness empirical relationships were used. As a result, it was found that the lowest hardness – lowest resistance to abrasion - highest fracture toughness – highest critical crack length of the sample without Ti and the highest hardness – highest resistance to abrasion – lowest fracture toughness – lowest critical crack length of the sample containing 1% Ti was awarded.

In this study, formation of composite coating containing silicon carbide amplifiers on ASTM A106-Gr B steel surface using the gas tungsten arc welding process is investigated. Therefore silicon carbide particles with different volume percentages on the steel surface were placed and by changing the current density, melting and mixing process was done with the base metal. The study coating microstructure by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was conducted alongside the spot analysis. The results showed that the dendritic structure of the resulting coating contains silicon carbide is capable of reinforcing that could be improved hardness and wear behavior of the coatings. Hard coatings by a micro-hardness measurement and with slab vickers and wear behavior of the coatings was evaluated by testing the wear-trip basis. Microhardness test results showed increased hardness was created (about 650 to 1150 Vickers) compared to uncoated samples (about 200 Vickers) is. Reviews wear behavior of coatings represent significant improvements in wear behavior of is added silicon carbide reinforcement. The main wear mechanism of uncoated samples delamination wear and surface oxidation and the samples were coated with a mixture of delamination wear, surface oxidation and adhesive wear were detected.
