Summary: ASMGT is a new method for the approximation of the depth and location of the magnetic sources. In this study، the horizontal location of the sources was estimated based on the position of the maximum values of the magnitude of the magnetic vector components (MMVC) and the analytic signals of the magnetic gradient tensor (ASMGT). Also، thedepth of the magnetic sources was estimated from the ratio of the maximum of MMVC tothe maximum of ASMGT. ASMGT is an analytic signal method based on the measurement of the magnetic gradient tensor (MGT) of the magnetic field components. The measurement of the MGT data is rapidly becoming a new tool for geophysical explorations. The principal advantage of the MGT method over traditional magnetic surveys is that the local variations are enhanced well، making small and weakly magnetic bodies recognizable. Consequently، it is ideal for locating small، near surface anomalies، and is therefore useful in archeological sites. This new method is applicable on data along profiles and grids. The MGT method was offered by Oruc (2010) over a space domain، whereas in this study، this method was implemented over a frequency domain on the synthetic magnetic data. In other words، taking the derivatives was performed over the frequency (wavenumber) domain by using the FFT style، while Oruc performed taking derivatives overthe space domain. Magnetic bodies are classified roughly into two categories، i. e. two- and threedimensional bodies. For the first category، a line of dipoles is usually considered and forthe second category a single dipole. The concept of the line of dipoles and point-dipole is often employed in the analysis of magnetic anomalies caused by geologic bodies whose geometric shapes approach to a thin horizontal cylinder and spheres، respectively. Theoretical examples have been carried out to compare the feasibility of the ASMGT method in obtaining the location and depth of a dipole and a line of dipoles over a wave number domain with space domain. The results showed more accuracy for the frequency domain than for the space domain، especially for a 2D structure. In fact، one of the basic characteristic of the analytic signal of the 2D magnetic sourcesis that the shape and location of the analytic signal amplitude are independent of the magnetization direction، and amplitude of the signal is symmetrical. However، for a 3D source، magnetic dipole، the maximum value of the amplitude of the analytic signal is not located directly over the body. Consequently، the shape of the amplitude of the analytic signal depends on the direction of magnetization and its asymmety. Therefore، there will be some errors in determining the horizontal location and depth of the magnetic dipoles based upon the maximum value of the amplitude of MMVC and ASMGT. By using the reduction to the pole filter (RTP)، the horizontal location and depth of the spheres are approximated with greater accuracy. Because of taking derivative in the MGT method، this method is sensitive to the noise; thus، upward continuation filter is applied to reduce the effect of noise. Generally، the ASMGT enhances the magnetic response of point dipole and line of dipoles placed at shallower depth. Hence، this new method is useful in determining thedepth and location of shallow magnetic bodies. All of the processing steps in this study were performed by using codes written in MATLAB.

Summary: One of the most important steps to make use of any renewable energy is to perform an accurate estimation of solar energy. Incoming shortwave (300-4000 nm) solar radiation is an important component in evaluating environmental factors. In addition to local solar radiation، a detailed spatial and temporal information of Global Solar Radiation (GSR) is required in urban design and regional plans. Further، beside the atmospheric parameters، the variability of the elevation، the surface orientation and the obstructions due to elevations are a source of great local differences affecting the incoming solar radiation. For this reason، several models based on GIS techniques have been recently proposed and developed، which consider the local topography for retrieving global solar radiation on the Earth’s surface. Actual irradiation which is received at any time and location depends on many factors such as solar zenith angle، solar declination angle، atmospheric transmissivity (i. e. cloud amount، aerosol optical depth)، diffused radiation، slope orientation and local topography. The commonly used radiation models (e. g. Angstrom- Prescott model) do not consider diffused radiation، atmospheric transmissivity (turbidity) and topography of the study sites; as they are not usualy available for model estimation. Using the Arc GIS tool، Batless et al. (2008) estimated the global solar radiation on a monthly basis. They showed that summer month estimations are more accurate than winter times. For a region with a different topography، Martinez et al. (2009) employed satellite images (Meteosat) and Digital Terrain Model for estimation of GSR. Their results showed reasonable performance for the model estimates. Bosch et al. (2010) addressed the same problem. To evaluate the potential of solar energy for Oman، Gastli and Charabi (2010) used Arc GIS method in their work. They found that Oman had ahigh potential of solar energy which could be used as a sustainable source of renewable energy. Iran is located in an unique part of the world، which experiences significant variation in altitude and latitude. The altitude of the country، which has a complex totography، varies from -40 to 5670 m above sea level. These geographical factors cause a wide range of climate types and different amounts of solar irradiance at the surface. The majority of the radiation modeling in Iran has relied on straightforward and simple radiation models such as Angstrom and Angstrom-Prescott. The main constraint of these models was the regional estimates of GSR which were not easily possible from the local estimates. As the first attempt in Iran، this work aimed to consider the effect of complex topography and altitude on surface GSR. In this study، global solar radiation was produced for four central provinces of Iran using the Solar Analyst model implemented on Arc GIS 9. 3. The Solar Analyst uses input parameters such as the diffuse fraction (k) and the atmospheric transmissivity. These parameters are not usually available in radiation networks. In this work، the aforesaid parameters were obtained with use of global solar radiation data (as measured in radiation sites) and extraterrestrial radiation (determined by astronomical models). Monthly localsolar irradiation in the year 2007 was calculated from a digital terrain model (DTM) with spatial resolution of 300 m، diffuse fraction (k) and atmospheric transmissivity (τ) for the study sites. Results were accordingly compared against the measured GSR values. Evaluation of the annual regional global solar radiation showed that the southern and northern slopes received the maximum and minimum incoming solar radiation، respectively. It was found that the elevation differences have less effect on the incoming global solar radiation than other topographic variables such as slope، surface orientation and the obstructions.

Summary: Voids of asphalt and water content of its base are among important properties of pavements that play significant roles in the bearing capacity of the pavements. A conventional method for quality control of pavements is to take cores. However، this method is time-consuming and expensive. In addition، it provides discontinuous data from the pavements. In this regard، one of the new challenges for engineers who construct roads is to determine qualitative parameters of pavements using non-destructive methods. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a non-destructive geophysical method that has been considered for this purpose. This method، opposite to the above-mentioned conventional method، is practically fast and relatively inexpensive. It also provides continuous data from pavements. In this method، a transmitter antenna sends an electromagnetic pulse to the ground reaching subsurface structures or anomalies. These pulses are reflected byelectrical inhomogeneities or anomalies، and then، the reflections are received by a receiver antenna. One of the effective and recent applications of this method is the qualitative control of pavements although the primary aim of using this method in pavements is to determine the thicknesses of the layers below the pavements including asphalt، base and sub-base layers. In this research work، 12 asphalt samples containing same materials but of different densities were prepared in laboratory. Void contents of the asphalt samples were determined using D2726 ASTM standard instructions. Similarly، 9 base samples containing same materials but of different moisture contents were also prepared in laboratory then، applying the surface reflection method، dielectric constant values of asphalt and base samples were calculated using 800 MHz and 250 MHz GPR shielded antennas، respectively finally، it was attempted to establish a mathematical relationshipbetween dielectric constant values and void contents of the asphalt samples. In a similar manner، a mathematical relationship was established between dielectric constant values and moisture contents of the base samples our results demonstrated that the dielectric constant values of the asphalt samples increased exponentially with increasing the density values of the asphalt samples via decreasing the void contents of the asphalt samples and vice versa. Furthermore، the amounts of dielectric constant of the base samples increased with increasing the moisture contents of the samples linearly. This showed that as the moisture contents of a base sample increased، the attenuation of the electromagnetic waves، generated by the GPR transmitter antenna، intensified in the base sample and the depth of penetration of the electromagnetic waves was remarkably reduced. It should be noted that the quantitative results، presented in this paper، contain reasonable errors، mainly because the surfaces of the samples are relatively small in comparison to the effective surface of the electromagnetic waves emitted from the GPR antenna. To obtain more accurate dielectric constant values from the tests، it is necessary to use GPR antennas with higher central frequencies than those used in this research work، and to use samples with larger surfaces than those used in the carried out experiments however، the results of this laboratory research work can be generalized to the real field work. Moreover، the results of this research work indicated that how engineering properties of pavements were well controlled and obtained by the use of nondestructive geophysical GPR method without needing to take cores from the pavements.

Summary: Visibility is defined as the maximum distance at which the selected target can be recognized. Atmospheric pollutants (aerosols and gases) may cause a visibility reduction by absorbing or scattering of visible light. Both gases and particles scatter and absorbradiation and contribute to the light extinction coefficient of the atmosphere. Atmospheric extinction in the vicinity of airports is of importance to the aviation. Moreover، although the light extinction causes no adverse health effects، it usually indicates the presence of pollutants harmful to health. These pollutants are found to be associated with health problems such as increases in daily mortality، and asthma. Therefore، light extinction is not just a visibility problem but is also a visual indicator of adverse air quality. Atmospheric extinction coefficient is directly related to the visual air quality andrepresents the optical characteristics of the pollutants along an optical path that contributes to visibility impairment. Thus، the extinction coefficient is an optical parameter related to air quality. Since the variation in human-eye observation could be highly due to different personal characteristics، the quantitative measures of atmospheric visibility are increasingly being used as indirect estimates of the air pollution especially where direct measurements are not available. Several instruments، such as telephotometers، nephelometers and transmisometers have been developed to monitor visibility. However، in recent years the digital techniques are rapidly applied in visibility monitoring. Digital cameras can be used to measure the distance of a target for computation of visibility، i. e. the digital image data can be characterized by illumination and reflectance components and translated to specific brightness values. This study was based on a new and more accurate method for measuring the atmospheric extinction coefficient for the city of Tehran using a digital image processing technique. A series of images obtained by a digital camera were archived from May 2010 to August 2011 and some selective cases were studied in details. Moreover، the visual ranges given from the Institute of Geophysics synoptic station were also used for the same period. The meteorological visual range was the distance at which a person could discern a dark object against the horizon sky. The Koschrneider equation was applied to convert the visual range into the light extinction. First، the average image intensities of the selected images were calculated to obtain the inherent and apparent contrast ratios. Then، using these quantities، the atmospheric extinction coefficient was determined for each image. Our results showed that there was a good agreement between the atmospheric extinction coefficients estimated from both methods، although the extinction coefficients estimated from the visual ranges were more than those of the digital image processing method. It is likely that the smaller values of the visual distances are due to the fact that they are reported by human observers at the synoptic stations. In addition، measurements of the air pollution concentration were used to investigate the influence of air pollutants on the extinction coefficients in the selected cases. Our results indicate that the light scattering by small particles formed from gaseous air pollutants، is a major contributor to light extinction rather than by large particles.

Summary: This research aimed to investigate the climatological effects (if any) of the Indian Monsoon on climate of Iran and to study the summer climate and summer rainfall in the east، south-east and center of the country. The study domain expanded between 0 to 60°N and 0 to 120°E، and the study period covered 61 years of 1950 to 2010، inclusive. The data consisted of the geopotential height، sea level pressure، temperature، meridional and zonal wind components، vertical velocity، precipitation، and the outgoing long-wave radiation (OLR) for three boreal summer months (June، July، August) taken from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis monthly dataset. In a typical summer a low level thermal low is dominant over Iran and the north-western parts of the Indian Subcontinent are associated with convergent flows in the lower troposphere and divergent flows in the mid- to high levels. In the summer، relative humidity is the highest over the Monsoon region،including the Arabian Sea، Indian Subcontinent and over the north of the Gulf of Bengal، and is usually the lowest in the southern half of Iran. The tropical easterly jet is located in the tropics، while the subtropical westerly jet moves northwards to the mid-latitudes. At low levels، westerlies and south-westerlies are predominant in the Monsoon regions، but strong prevailing winds are northerly and northwesterly in Iran. Four dynamical and convectional indices were calculated to determine the intensity of the Indian Monsoon، and the correlation coefficients between meteorological quantities at different atmospheric levels over Iran and these indices were estimated. Our results showed that the correlation coefficients between the Monsoon intensity and the geopotential height were positive and significant at mid- to high levels. The correlation between the intensity of the Indian Monsoon and vertical velocity and zonal wind was negative and significant، indicating an increased downward velocity and strengthened easterlies over Iran with increased intensity of the Indian Monsoon. The magnitudes of the atmospheric variables were calculated separately for the years when the Indian Monsoon intensity was abnormally weak and strong. Our results showed a stronger convergence in the lower and a divergence in the upper levels associated with a stronger tropical easterly jet and subtropical westerly jet in the years that the Indian Monsoon was abnormally strong. Relative humidity was higher and low level westerliesand south-westerlies were stronger over the Monsoon region and near the equator in such years. The atmospheric patterns for the years with maximum summer precipitation in Iran were also compared with those with minimum summer precipitation. We found that the geopotential height was smaller in the lower levels and greater in the upper levels when the summer in Iran was relatively wet. In these years، the position and intensity of the tropical easterly jet and subtropical westerly jet changed، thereby vertical velocity، relative humidity and temperature increased in Iran، but decreased in Monsoon regions.

Summary: Linear and nonlinear time-history analyses are necessary tools for many fields of structural/earthquake engineering including vulnerability analyses and response evaluations. In this regard، one of the most important requirements is the selection of proper acceleration time histories as the analysis input. These records can be obta from natural earthquake records or can be generated synthetically and artificially. The first option is usually preferred to the others since it can provide true information about strong ground shaking characteristics to reflect the source، path، and site effects. These characteristics include several parameters such as earthquake magnitude، epicenter distance، duration، Arias intensity، spectral intensity، soil type and peak ground responses. However، well-known seismic design codes offer their linear design spectra to which the earthquake accelerogram is scaled; instead of direct matching the seismologicalparameters. The number of ground motions recorded at a given site is not generally sufficient; thus، it is required to select other earthquakes from real-world catalogues based on their similarity to the site-specific record (s). However، it is a challenging task to deserve such a similarity due to the existence of several criteria affecting the earthquake characteristics. The present work deals with the problem of selecting a number of appropriate ground motions among an available catalogue in order to best match a given site-specific earthquake record. As an unsupervised solution in this research، clustering techniques were concerned. A set of data in a multi-dimensional space were classified into some clusters in such a way that the objects in every cluster have the most similarity with each other and the least similarity with any object in the other clusters. Here، both deterministic and non-deterministic approaches in such a clustering problem were employed and compared. The method of K-means was selected as a deterministic algorithm due to its popularity and computational efficiency among clustering techniques. A set of input clusters was required to be introduced for this algorithm before its run. However، this method itself was deterministic. Such an initial set is usually chosen by trial-error or randomly. Depending on the initial input clusters، the K-means algorithm reveals different local optima instead of global optimum as the clustering result. In order to overcome such a challenge، a non-deterministic approach was studied as well. In this regard، a Genetic Algorithm، GA، was utilized as a well-trusted metaheuristic among non-deterministic algorithms with the capability of overpassing localresults and approaching to the true global optimum. Proper genetic encoding and operators were developed for the current optimal clustering problem. Consequently، a variety of earthquake characteristics were taken into account in the utilized chromosome including magnitude، epicenteral distance، duration، Arias intensity، spectral intensity، soil type، peak ground responses and a specialized error measure. This measure was defined based on how compatible was the response spectrum of the record with the codified design spectrum as the target. In the present study، average silhouette widths and related profile plot were used to evaluate effectiveness of the proposed clustering processes. Quality of clustering was thus measured taking into account both compactness and separation of the clusters. Consequently، the clustering result corresponding to the maximum amount of the average silhouette bandwidth was announced as the solution. Input-records required for the timehistory analyses، were then selected from the cluster which includeed the target siteassociated earthquake. Using different numbers of clusters، the proposed genetic search stood well superior to the method of K-means in achieving the best clustering for the present problem.

Summary: Rapid and accurate assessment of earthquake source parameters is extremely useful in seismology from different perspectives including hazard assessment and also for rapid response services. Nowadays، there exist various automated phase detection and location algorithms that provide near real-time seismic bulletins. Such algorithms rely on explicit phase identification and complex event association techniques that must be reformulated for different velocity models accordingly. These algorithms often use only P and S phases (Withers et al.، 1999). In many cases، the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is small، making it difficult to use the classical methods based on phase identification. However، event location based on a migration approach has recently been proposed in seismology (e. g.، Kawakatsu and Montagner، 2008; Larmat et al.، 2009; Kim et al.، 2011; Gharti et al.، 2011) mostly because phase identification is not required in this method. Time-reversal (hereafter referred to as TR) is a migration-based approach، in which the observedseismograms are back propagated in time in order to determine the location of the events. The TR method can potentially provide more accurate information on earthquake processes especially for small earthquakes where phase-identification-based methods are hardly used due to a low SNR. In general، classic earthquake location is a nonlinear problem and linearization oftravel time equations in earthquake location is mandatory based on a Taylor series expansion around some prior estimate (or guess). The locations of events also contain random errors، for example errors associated with the arrival time، as well as systematic biases due to manual phase picking. On the other hand، the most important error in earthquake locations with the TR method is only the inherent dependence of earthquake locations on an assumed seismic velocity structure of the Earth. The history of the TR method، which takes the advantage of none-phase identification، can be traced back to automated local and regional seismic event detection and a location system using waveform correlation by McMechan (1985) and Whiters et al. (1999). In recent years، thesame theory of waveform correlation is used by various researchers to investigate earthquake location in local (e. g. Maggi and Michelini، 2010)، regional (OBrien et al.، 2011) and telesimic distances (e. g. Ekstrom، 2006; Larmat et al.، 2006) using the TR method. The time reversal algorithm has been recently used to study the location and characterization of seismic sources in elastic media. This algorithm is related to the back propagating of the recorded data in earth in reverse time to find the parameters of an event. In this study، we investigate the location of small seismic events in south-eastern of Iran in an automatic mode. Most of the events are linked with structures of east of the Lut Block occurred after the main shock on 2010، December 20 with Mw 6. 3. Data from a temporary network was used to investigate the P phase clarification using a kurtosis analysis on records and then it was migrated to the source in reversed time to find thelocation of events without human bias. We tested several time reversal imaging conditions by synthesizing events for location. Finally، we used the best obtained parameters from a synthetic test to apply the same procedure to a real database observed after the main shock in the Rigan region which had been recorded by the network. We showed that although the obtained parameters were used in the real data، simple limitations such as number of contributed station in location should be used to improve the location. The results showed that well-constrained centers of events were in good agreement with the trend and dip of faults in the region and the focal mechanism of the main shock.

Summary: Southeastern Iran، in Makran region، due to movement of the Arabian plate toward Eurasia، the oceanic crust is subducted beneath the continental crust forming a subductionzone. This movement and subduction has given a special situation to seismicity and geology of this zone. Covering the lake of seismological studies and the effect of geological structure on seismic wave propagation in this region، we have studied effects of the medium on propagated seismic waves from the source to the receiver using recorded data on stations of International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology from 2005 to 2011. The coda quality factor، Qc، in addition to engineering applications، could be used and provide remarkable information for seismicity studies and analyzing how the subduction of oceanic crust is treating. Regarding the extent of the studying area، it has been divided into three subareas of Southeastern of Central Iran،Southeastern of Zagros and Makran، then for each، the variation of quality factor with depth is evaluated. The “Single Back-Scattering Method” is used for estimate. The frequency dependence of coda wave quality factor for events up to 100 km epicentral distance at each three subareas is determined. Also، the lateral and depth variation of Qc are computed and discussed. In this study، the Qc values are calculated for 12 lapse times (5 to 60s with a step of 5s) for three regions. The frequency dependent relationships of Qc، for SE Zagros varies from Q  (12 1. 1) f (1. 260. 02) c at 5s to Q  (1251. 1) f (1. 070. 014) c at 60s lapse time windows. Similarly، for SE Central Iran، the relationship varies from Q (17 1. 3) f (1. 130. 051) c at 5s to Q  (147 1. 3) f (0. 890. 038) c at 60s lapse time windows; and for Makran region varies from Q  (12 1. 1) f (1. 30. 015) c at 5s to Q  (137 1. 1) f (1. 030. 018) c at 60s lapse time windows. In all regions، the value of Q is less than 200، which implies، beside a highly tectonically and seismically behavior، a highly heterogeneous medium. The results show an increase in Qc value with increasing lapse time window. Among three studied regions، SE Zagros has the minimum Qc and so is more tectonically active compared with the two others. The North Makran and SE Central Iran are places in thenext ranks، respectively. Estimated Qc at bigger lapse time window indicates less attenuation at bigger depth. In Makran region at a depth of ~97 km the variation rate of Q suddenly increases. Based on available geological cross sections، for the eastern and western Makran، depth of about 100km of oceanic crust is in the northern region of the western Makran، which shows good agreement with our observation that oceanic crust has higher velocity، so attenuation is less than continental crust.

Summary: The purpose of the geophysical studies is to obtain information about the shape، location and physical parameters of the subsurface bodies. To do this، we often need to solve the inverse problem. On the other hand، the solution to this problem is very complex because of the many solutions compatible with an acquired data set; indeed، different bodies can cause the same image on the surface. The probability tomography approach allows the analysis of the experimental data without introducing any a priori information on the investigated structures. This method is able to give a geometrical representation of the buried sources of anomalies. Nevertheless، the main difference between this method and the inverse problems is the absence of any response to estimate the physical parameters of the source of the anomaly. The probability tomography was originally formulated for the self-potential method، and then extended to the Electric، EM induction، Gravity and Magnetic prospecting. In Gravity formulation، it was proposed as an approach to vertically explore the subsurface in order to locate the most probable source of anomalies appearing in a field dataset collection in a given datum domain. First، the Newtonian-type integral defining the Bouguer anomaly function was solved as a sum of elementary contributions from points like mass contrast elements. The power associated with the Bouguer effect was derived as a sum of cross correlation integrals between the Bouguer anomaly data and scanner function expressing the gravity effect from a point like mass contrast element. Using the Schwarz’s inequality property، we achieved a Δ-mass occurrence probability function as a suitable tool for determination of the depth to the source of a given gravity anomaly field. The 3D Δ-mass occurrence probability function is a normalized correlation which its positive values refer to a mass excess at point q while negetive values are the results of a mass deficit at the same point with respect to the host volume. The tomographic procedure consists of scanning the subsurface with the elementary source and calculating the occurrence probability function at the nodes of a regular grid. The complete set of grid values is used to highlight the zone of the highest probability ofmass contrast concentrations. This range is defined as the most probable location for the source of the gravity anomaly. In this study، gravity anomalies due to synthetic gravity data created for spherical models with a density contrast of 1gr/cm3، radius of 2m and at the depth of 10m wereinterpreted. To apply the procedure، the surface was divided into a regular grid with a sampling factor of 1m. The sphere was located at the center of the grid. The obtained results from applying tomography method on syntethic models implied that the method had a high resolution in determintion of maximum and minimum depth of subsurface anomalies. The effect of random noise was examined on the model، by 20% random noise، and showed that the effect of noise was negligible on the procedure. The practical application of real data was also illustrated. The survey area was close to Abadeh، a city in Fars province، in south west of Iran. The main geological units were constructed from silt stone، conglomerate and limestone. Ore bodies of Barite were mainly out-cropped in limestone unit. The gravity station grid consisted of 200 measurement points on a grid of 5m to 10m. Applying the proposed method to real data، the horizontal and vertical extention of the anomaly were detected with satisfactory results.

Summary: In this study we used seismic data available from the permanent stations in the NW Iran to study seismic activities and crustal structure beneath the Tabriz region. The region of study is situated in the seismically active NW tectonic province of Iran، where detailed seismic information on the crustal structure and seismicity is lacking. The availability of seismic data collected since 1996 by Tabriz permanent short-period seismological network provided us with an unprecedented opportunity to study the seismicity and crustal seismic structure of this region. Our seismic data consisted of waveforms of local events collected by Tabriz seismological network operated by the Institute of Geophysics of Tehran University (IGTU) and two broad-band permanent seismic stations from the Iranian National Seismic Network operated by the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES). We manually picked the P and S arrival times on all collected waveforms. The events were initially located using a 1-D model used by the Tabriz network for routine daily event location. Of a total number of 728 events of local magnitudes greater than 2 recorded between 1996 and 2006 by the seismic stations، 361events of azimuthal gaps of less than 180 degrees and time residual of less than 1. 0 second were selected for the subsequent analyses. We then simultaneously inverted the arrival times of the local events for one dimensional velocity-depth models and event relocation. By considering the nonuniqueness of the inversion process، we inverted the data using a sufficient number of initial models. Finally، the models showing consistency with each other were selected. Some standard tests were performed to make sure that the final models were in agreement with the observed data. These tests revealed that the results of inversion were stable. The final best 1-D model is a 5-layer model to a depth of 35 km. Since we used local shallow events recorded at a small-aperture local network، the models are not valid for the depths deeper than 35 km. The final 1-D model gave P and S velocities smaller than the global average values for the orogens. This was because the study area was an active orogenic belt. On the other hand، the Vp/Vs ratio (which was found to be equal to 1. 745 using the Wadati Method) of our 1-D models showed values comparable to the average values for a typical continental crust. This presumably indicates that sources of partial melts، if exist beneath the region، are most likely residing in the lower crust. We also examined the event distribution in depth in order to delineate the geometry of the active faults. The majority of events occurred at the north of the North Tabriz fault. Therefore، it seems to be a vertical fault with a gentle northward dip and the events frequently occur in a depth range of 10 to 25 km (within the crystalline basement). And also some hidden faults seem to exist، which are not traced on the surface geological maps.
