In this paper, exact solution of free vibration analysis has been established to study the effect of delamination on natural frequencies of thick laminated composite beams. Timoshenko beam theory with various boundary conditions has been employed. The Poisson’s effect is considered in the formulation. Both free and constrained modes have been considered. The influence of the size and location of the delamination on the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a beam are investigated. Studying of mode shapes clarifies the reason of difference of free and constrained modes results, well. The natural frequency shows a high sensitivity for the long and close-to-the-midplane delaminations, but low sensitivity for the others. Considering the Poisson’s effect has almost not influence the cross-ply laminate natural frequencies. But, ignoring it in angle-ply laminates may cause large error. Obtained results are compared with the analytical and experimental data reported in the literature to verify the validity of the present analysis. By considering Poisson’s effect for angle-ply laminates new data has been released.

In this paper, using the Hu-Washisu principle, the equation governing the lateral vibration of a pipe with a breathing crack has been derived. The crack is modeled as a continuous disturbance function in stress and displacement fields. In order to obtain the natural frequencies of the pipe with a breathing crack, a new model is introduced for the bilinear stiffness of the pipe at each lateral vibration mode. Using this model, the governing equation of motion is converted into the standard form which can be analyzed by the Lindstedt-Poincar’ method. Then the natural frequencies of the cracked pipe are derived. The first term of the solution is the response of the corresponding linear system with a stiffness equal to the mean value of the cracked pipe stiffness in fully open and fully closed cases of the crack, and the remaining terms represent the effect of nonlinearity due to the opening and closing the crack. The results reveal that the reduction in the natural frequencies for the case of breathing crack is less than that for open crack. The accuracy of the model is verified by comparing the theoretical results with the experimental data reported in the literature.

Free convection heat and mass transfer in a 2D porous cavity are studied by finite difference method. Natural convection is investigated by both heat and mass transfer inside the anisotropic porous cavity using the Darcy law. The flow is considered to be two-dimensional, Newtonian and unsteady. The porous medium is assumed anisotropic both hydrodynamically and thermally. The effects of principle axis of the permeability tensor, i.e. θ, on heat and mass transfer are studied. Moreover, different permeability values, i.e. 0.1, 1 and 10, are considered in the simulation. Streamlines, isotherms and the averaged Nusselt number are also reported. The governing equations are solved based on the finite difference discretization.

Aeroelasticity is the main source of instability in structures under the influence of aerodynamic forces. One of the most important type of instabilities is coupled bending-torsional vibration, which is called flutter. In this paper, the aeroelastic stability of a composite wind turbine blade has been studied. Geometry, layup, and loading of the composite turbine blade have been compared with other structures. To study the phenomenon of the blade flutter, two numerical and analytical methods have been used. Finite Element Method (FEM), and JAR23 standard have been used in the numerical studies. Three-dimensional dynamic analysis of the blade loading has been carried out; the flutter phenomenon has been investigated in turbine blade by using the FEM that includes torsion and bending modes. Two-dimensional classical method of analytical analysis has been used to estimate flutter speed. Results of the numerical method provide safety factors of 4 and 1.39 for stress analysis and aeroelastic stability, respectively. Also, the analytical method gives the safety factor of 1.38 for aeroelastic stability, which has good agreement with the results of numerical method.

Nozzle is an important component of wind tunnel. Its main functions: conversion of static pressure to dynamic pressure and reduction of turbulence intensity and helping in uniformity of the velocity profile in the test section of wind tunnel. In order to reduction of wind tunnel building costs, in some wind tunnel special vertical type, setting chamber may be replaced by a bell mouth at the nozzle inlet. Experimental methods such as hot wire anemometry have been used in this research. Result show that the effect of nozzle in blowing and suction type of wind tunnels is similar. Effect of bell mouth at the nozzle inlet is not significant for turbulence intensity reduction, but bell mouth of the nozzle inlet reduce the losses of nozzle about 7%.

Manufacturing and production methods such as welding with non uniform deformation cause significant residual stresses. In automotive industry, resistance spot welding process was used to joint chassis and body parts widely. In present research, with utilization of the hole drilling method and using the resistance strain gage, effects of nugget diameter variation on residual stresses in AISI 1008 spot weldments were investigated. The distributions of radial and hoop residual stresses in edge of the nugget and longitudinal and transverse residual stresses in the nugget center of eight standard specimens with the different nugget diameters were determined and illustrated. The results show that by increasing the nugget diameter, the radial and hoop residual stresses were decreased.
