The spread of Kura-Araxes pottery across the Near East from the Northeastern Anatolia to Southern Levant during the 4th and 3rd millennia B. C has been the issue of many researches and discussions. The current article showing the results of typological studies and ceramic comparisons carried out on 6 sites of the Early Bronze Age of northwest Iran. Here، the ceramic assemblage of Yanik Tepe which، sometimes has referred as so-called Yanik Culture، is considered as a comparative reference، and the assemblages from Kura-Araxes sites such as: Goey Tepe، Haftavan Tepe، Kohneh Pasgah، Kohneh Tepe، Kul Tepe Jolfa have been paralleled with 85 pottery types of Yanik described in detail by Summers. Firstly، 496 shreds from 5 sites have classified in 4 groups leading to recognition the diversity among types in 5 sites and facilitate the comparisons. This typology has also show that the sequence of types of 5 sites are not the same. In addition، the close ratio in 3 sites including Goy Tepe، Haftavan Tepe، and Kohneh Tape، has proved while this is not accrued at Kul Tape and Kohne Tepe. At the next step، the sherds have compared to Yanik pottery assemblage; The resemblance ratio of given sherds to Yanik pottery are recorded in the tables related to every site along with the descriptions related to every type helping to draw a complete picture of some shreds whose complete sample is obtained from Yanik. The compared sherds showing the similarities of 37 types of Yanik pottery; of them، 15 types include bowls of various shapes، 19 types include some types of jars and the 3 remaining types are including type 70: cooking pots، type 24: open cups، and type 74: wide shallow dishes. Among the compared types، types 19 and 25 show the most parallel with compared assemblages. Among these sites، Kul Tepe Jolfa with 14 types and Kohneh Pasgah with 6 types show the most and minimum similarities to Yanik pottery assemblage respectively. Therefore، comparisons proved that; in Goy Tepe only 13 sherds of total number of 69 potteries are comparable، and the ratio is 5. 31; in Haftavan Tepe is only 10 sherds of total number of 41 shreds، and the ratio is 4. 1; in Kul Tape the similarity is visible on 26 sherds of total number of 87 sherds and the ratio is 3. 34; in Kohneh Pasgah only 10 sherds of total number of 67، and the ratio is 6. 7; in Kohneh Tepe the only 15 shreds of total number of 232 shreds، and the ratio is 15. 47. The results of carried out comparisons show that the pottery samples illustrate that there has been no intera-site interaction in between this site and other sites، and there is not significant convergent except technical characteristics of pottery production among sites. Comparisons were carried out to re-emphasize using the term Kura-Araxes to refer to the Early Bronze Age in this geographic area including the West and East of the center of Iranian plateau; aiming to reduce the multi-terminology and to use a title could explain the characteristics of this culture more comprehensively. The aim is not to eliminate this term from terminologies، but we want to emphasize on the discontinuity of using this term on the basis of the static analysis on potteries.

Bronze Age is one of the important prehistoric periods of Iran, especially central zagros with its inter-mountain plains which requires more study and investigation aiming to understand the cultural data of every region and also the chronology. One of the important and key regions in Central Zagros is “Alaeshtar” plain, located in north of Luristan, has 26 archaeological sites attributed to Bronze Age which its largest sits is “Tappeh Gariran”. But, comprehensive and accurate study Carrie out on the region Here, we address the study and investigation of potteries related to the Bronze Age of Tappeh Gariran and then new approach is done aiming to chronology the site and Alaeshtar plain by the presence of early and Late Bronze Age pottery. Gariran is located in the north of Alaeshtar with 13 ha, in diameter having cultural sequence from the 4th millennium B.C to Islamic period respecting to have a sequence of three different periods of early and late bronze; it can be resolver of Bronze Age studies and chorology in the region. This query, 102 shreds from Gariran Bronze Age been studied. Based on known index samples of central Zagros Bronze Age, potteries have clustered into four groups of buff, red, brick and brown; then each of them have analyzed and compared with the same samples from the neighboring regions. Regarding that, Godin Teppe is used as a comparison and chronology reference, but in order to reinforce the potteries typology, other neighboring index sites have also been referred. Comparison the potteries with the similar samples from identified sites in the neighboring regions of Alaeshtar indicates typological relationships in between potteries from Alaeshtar and Tappeh Gariran But, majority of potteries, respecting to the chronological tradition which was common by the Bronze Age, is concentrated in middle and late periods. Early Bronze chronology in central Zagros regions is uncleared regarding to the influence of different phenomena and respective, Yaniqcultural data. Yaniq culture has permeated in the west and plains around central Zagros to Kangavar plain, Nahavand and finally Malayer plain moving toward southern boarders. according to carried out studies on the chronology of pottery, Yaniq pottery have adapted to the east areas of central Zagros this approach is offer able from Kangavar to Malayer plain due to the presence of this type of cultural material in the central Zagros. Whereas, less sample is obtained from Kangavar valley southward. Base and criterion of placing Yaniq pottery as a basic approach for understanding early bronze of central Zagros, especially north regions of Luristan, is cussed turbulence of chronology status of the large areas from north of Luristan to south of Kermanshah. Only two from 102 shreds of the research in Tappe Gariran are comparable with early bronze pottery, polychrome pottery, Majority of samples indicate pottery types of Godin III. On the other hand, polychrome pottery similar to Posht-Kuh (Luristan) regions and Khozestan plain is also less than one cannot find certain chronology relationship between Alaeshtar plain and southern regions in Posht-Kuh and Khuzestan plain by the early Bronze Age, but it cannot be denied that the cultural tradition and it can be known homogenous with same works. But, these low numbers of pottery sample related to early period of Bronze Age are showed and confirmed the presence of early bronze in Tappe Gariran. It seems that common pottery of early bronze in Tappe Gariran has other specification (maybe local) respecting to the given materials; chronology method used in Godin Teppe which is done and used in majority of central Zagros is not adaptable and applicable in Tappe Gariran.

Researchers and archaeologists have always been interested in the elemental analysis of ancient Iranian coins. However, a systematic analysis of the Achaemenid coins is still lacking. The Iranians minted coins since the time of the Medes. Darius I (552-486 B.C) is the first Achaemenid king have used the coinage system to regulate trade across his empire. The Achaemenid gold coins were called Daric, while their silver coins were called Sigloi. Daric was a thick gold coin, which had a standard weight of 8.4 grams. The gold used in the coins was of very high quality with a purity of 95.83%. The Sigloi weight about 5.6 grams and its purity was more than 96%. The face of the coins carried an image of a Persian bowman, thought it might be the King himself. The flip side of the coins bear irregular indentations. The Achaemenid coins bear no inscription, hence it is not possible to find the date of mintage with any accuracy. The Achaemenid coins were mainly minted in Sardis, Lyida, Lybia, Pamphilia, and Sidon. During the Parthian period (247 B.C – 224 A.D), commerce was carried out with silver, copper, and bronze coins. The face of the coins bore a relatively accurate image or profile of the King, and the flip side typically (for about 5 centuries), bore the image of of Arsaces sitting on a throne and holding a bow. This indicates the respect the Parthian kings held for the founder of their dynasty. The Parthian coins have markings that are abbreviations for city where the coins were minted. From these markings it is clear that coins were minted in Nisa, Dara, Hekatompylos (near present Damghan), Thymbrax (Sari), Syrinc (near Sari), Ecbatana (near modern Hamedan), Susa, Seleucia, Raga (Ray), Marv, Heart, Kangavar and Nahavand. In this work, 27 Achaemenid silver coins and 62 Parthian silver coins were analyzed. The Achaemenid coins and 20 of Parthian coins are belonging to the National Museum of Iran and the rest of Parthian coins are kept in Tamashagah-e Pool Museum. The concentrations of the chemical elements presenting in the coins have been measured using PIXE analysis. This analysis is carried out by bombarding the samples with protons accelerated through a 2MV electric potential to an energy of 2 MeV. The proton beam current that was used in this analysis was between 2 and 3 Nano-amperes. The beam was supplied by the 3MV Van de Graff accelerator belonging to the Physics and Accelerators School of the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Center. As a result of the proton bombardment, characteristic X-rays are emitted. The energy of these X-rays is specific to each element and can be used to identify the elements present in the sample. The number of X-ray photons of a specific energy can be used to determine the concentration of these same elements within the sample. With this technique, one can measure the concentration of Ag, Au, Pb, Zn, Al, S, Cu, Cl, Ca, Ti, Mn, and Fe in the coins with an accuracy of parts per million (ppm). Since the metallic composition of the coins is of most importance in deciding their value, we measured the concentration of metals in these coins. The average concentration of silver in the Achaemenid and Parthian coins, were 91% and 86% respectively. The Parthian coins also contained three times as much copper impurity as the Achaemenid coins and 5 times as much gold impurity. However, the concentration of lead and iron impurities in the Parthian coins were less than those of the Achaemenid coins. The statistical analysis of these coins indicated that the Achaemenid coins can be separated from the Parthian coins through elemental analysis. This analysis also showed that most of the Achaemenid coins in our sample were minted in the same place.

Archaeo-metry is a relatively new branch of archaeological science in which archaeological finds are examined by different procedures of laboratory methods. The ancient coins are of the very useful archaeological data. Coin is considered as a useful criteria to scales and weights recognition‚ even with the study of cities in which coins are minted‚ historical geography of that region can be drawn more accurate. In this research‚ a collection of 15 silver coins belonging to 2nd Orod and 4th Farhad (57-2 B.C), using PIXE method, spectroscopy has been done. PIXE method is an accurate and powerful non-destructive elemental analysis which is applicable in different fields of them is archaeology. PIXE is an appropriate method to study archeological material especially coins, because it has high sensitivity and are quick and non-restrictive. The analysis of coins which using of this method is based on this assumption that available rare elements in coins particularly gold can be considered as a criteria to check the number of mine. The elements such as Arsenic, Antimony, Copper, Zink, and Tin during mining are separated from silver and the amount of their density in the final mining is less than 2%. These elements can’t be used to identify the place and types of stone in mine. Among the elements reporting silver in their analyses, only Gold is effective in identifying feature and origin of silver, because gold is the only element which has fixed amount of density compared to silver. In the process of cupellation, gold is not influenced by oxidation and is remained in silver. Therefore it can help us to identify the mines. If this amount is different, it can be a marker of different geographical region. Furthermore, the amount of element density can be useful in the analysis of politico-economic conditions studying in that period. In this article, as a result of decomposition of element in coins, the amount of gold density was identified. The amount of density of this element in coins shows used mine stone in coin number two of Orod with the amount of 41% gold was minted in Susa and coin number 8 of Farhad with the amount of 72% gold minted in Ekbatan, was different from other coins and showed different mine. Thus, the analysis of findings about elemental composition of coins reveals that the Parthian government used various mines to supply used metal for minting silver coins. A total of 15 studied coins, 4 coins was belonged to Orod minting at Ekbatan, Susa, Mitrdat kert, and Rey. The amount of silver in these coins is between 87.29 to 93.65 % which shows the high amount of silver in these mints; and also, 11 coins belonged to Farhad which one was minted in Laodicea, 7 in Miterdat kert, and 3 in Ekbatan. The amount of silver in minted coins in Ekbatan was between 86.13 to 90.73%, in Miterdat kert between 56.58 to 86.49 and in a coin belonged to Laodicea 91.66%. The results of this research shows that the amount of silver in coins of Orod compared to coins of Farhad refer to favorable economic conditions in the period of this king. It can be said that the victory of Parthian in Karhe war was the reason of these favorable conditions, because the winning over Romans lead to occupy the Mesopotamia lead to politico-economic stability. On the other hand, high fluctuation in coins of Farhad minting in Miterdat kert, compared to coins of Orod minting in Ekbatan and Laodicea, shows the different politico-economic conditions of western and eastern part of kingdom in the period of Farhad.

Last year when I visited Leiden Museum of Antiquity (Rijksmuseum van Oudh Eden) for the first time, Parthian figurines, displayed at a small window in the Near East section and the part related to Iran, attracted my attention. To my eyes, they seemed very unique and of importance, therefore, I decided to introduce them briefly and write a report on them. In the present research, I will introduce 18 anthropomorphic Parthian figurines (five male, thirteen female) in six groups, including musicians, laying women, nude goddesses, mother and child, men bust and warriors with shields. They were mostly recovered from regions such as Iran (Susa), Seleucia, Assyria, and Turkey. The considerable quantity of female figurines has caused speculations and debates, the most prominent of which being the probability of their sacredness and their subsequent affiliation to Anahita, the goddess of the Waters and associated with fertility, healing and wisdom. The results of the previous examination of the similar works indicate that figurines were created in various styles and shapes, from abstract to realistic and plain while some of them have a mixed appearance. The clay or stone (usually marble) figurines are covered with a layer of color, while the hands are attached to the body with an string. The hands, interestingly, can move freely. All the figurines are in upright position and only one of them has a leaning posture. Some of them are made in a primitive way, with a sense of nativity in performing the heads, the hands and the feet. Some of these figurines have clothes on; some others are naked which probably represent their role in a ritual or royal performance. The outstanding peculiarity of these figurines is the many musical instruments accompanying them. Among the most interesting items are musicians with wind instruments. The comparison with the other similar works leads us to speculate that depicting female musicians were most probably taken into consideration only at Parthian and Sassanid eras. Nothing can be said, with certainty, about the function of these figurines. Are they made just to be dedicated to a temple as a vow or are they made as a decorative object by an artist or an artisan to nurture his or her own creativity and craftsmanship? These are the questions that deserve more investigation and speculation and haven’t been answered yet. One of the most important issues in history and the archaeology of each period and everywhere is to understand the structure of the socio-political systems as well as the relationship between different places in a region which implies the interactive systems of the human societies in various aspects. On the other hand, it can be said that the socio-political systems are composed of various interactive systems which can be studied in three categories namely: sub-regional, regional and cross-regional. Although complete achieving the mentioned structures in a region through the archaeological studies is impossible but applying scientific and logic method to some extent we can reconstruct them in a given region which its results could be largely applied to different regions. Given to the horizontal settlement system of the region, the Parthian era and the areas belonged to it in Sistan is featured to have a relative high quantity and quality, and in some regions we can identify all areas of one Parthian set. One of these regions is Kolak castle region in Maal, Sistan. On one hand, the most important challenges debated on such settlements is to study the hierarchy between the existing settlements in the region, and on the other hand, the relationships between them which can be fundamentally questioned as “how is the relation structure of the sub-sets in one settlement set dated back the Parthian era?”. I order to respond the above question, firstly, by conducting archaeological studies applying step-by-step survey in an area with 44. Square kilometers, leading to identify some 76 archaeological sites dated back the Parthian era, then study the characterizations of every area, cultural material, the settlement period, the distance, the distance with main areas and the placement location towards the reconstruction of the relation structure of the sub-sets in any settlement set were studied. In the present research, on one hand, it was specified that the arrangement of the existing areas in a region is in form of small-size subsets consisting of 9 to12 archaeological sites in distances less than 400.meters that every sub-set has been formed in a specific boundary and can be easily separated from other sub-sets existing in the main set. It was cleared that in every sub-set most of the areas are similar in terms of area and only one or some sites have larger area. Ultimately, it can be concluded that the settlement set of Koolak region indicates a type of social structure relying on feudalism and small and large serfdom villages in which the main sub-set and Koolak Castle are located. In other word, it was the main core and set of government of the region’s governor. In this structure, other settlement sub-sets represent small and large villages which according to the area and distance from the main core have had different significance and functions but on the basis of a well-organized pattern they were all directly or indirectly linked to the main core and other sub-sets. In the above-mentioned social structure, the governor in order to administrate the region under his governorship tried to maintain his monopoly of important and leading industries, on one hand, and he indirectly tried to make the relationships between the satellite villages with each other so as to control the region easily on the other hand. But it should be mentioned that the governor of the region was regarded as the subordinate of the great governor or feudal lord of Sistan who in a higher power hierarchy was governing and controlling all the region’s subservient rulers.

Of the important purposes of Archaeology, is studying the interaction of communities with each other and the environment; the cultural processes of highlands with more than 2000 m. elevation above sea level is a considerable subject in the Iranian archaeology has not been followed yet. In the present research with environmental approach and using GIS software, on the basis of examining the geographical factors respect to the settlement pattern of Sassanid era, we came to study that why and how Sassanid settlements in the Farsan county, as a region with such intermountain valleys and plain, formed and goes on, and determined which all the geographical factors didn’t possess an equal importance as the most important factors in this process were water and adequate pasture accessibility. That’s it, locating in the close area with enough pasture for pastoral nomad communities, settling in the area with irrigation agriculture potential for the sedentary people, and communicating roads availability for both groups has a considerable role in the formation of settlement pattern of Sassanid Farsan.Compare to the Parthian, Sassanid settlement pattern of the region didn’t show a significant change, except the larger size of Sassanid sites. Respecting this, we have to note that more than half - 51.74 % - of the Sassanid sites of the region formed on Partian settlements; 31 % newly assessed and 17.24 % of them including sites which were occupied once over the prehistoric times. In the continuation process which have been started by the Elymais period, settlement pattern of the region in the Sassanid period; here, on the influence of the developed socio-political system control and probably shaped under Sassanid centralized power investment. Regard to the connection between settlement pattern and the roads, the sites are not necessarily next to the riverbeds. In the Sassanid Period as precedent eras, habitation in mountain slopes and on the hills beside the plain have continued; we apparently saw that the settlements concentration have moved to the center of the plains. In this Period, the size of the sites are greater than before, which is a sign of population growth by the Sassanid period. It seems that the population growth in this period is the consequence of vast exploitation of resources with habitation on the center of the plains and more resources accessibility, using strategic situation of Farsan region and communication roads, which long before identified by nomads. The interaction between this region and other cultural zones, i.e. Khuzestan and Fars in the Sassanid period reflected by the archaeological data, e.g. pottery form and decoration; this similarity is matched with migration roads of the Bakhtiyari tribes. To sum up, there is an important difference between Sassanid settlement pattern and modern patterns of population distribution and cities of Farsan County are consequence of different socio-economic and technologic situation. This case indicates that beside geographical variety, factors like socio-economic interactions and statistic characteristics plays an important role in the site distribution and settlement patterns.

Sassanid art is known in many aspects as the representative of Ancient Iranian art and also its last survivor. Both secular and religious elements can be found in the art of this period. Here, the Author is analyzing the influence of Iranian Sassanid art especially royal hunting on Omayyad royal art comparing the Qusayr amrah Palace and the Sassanid Taq-e Bostan. The goal is to determine the rule of Ancient Iranian art in developing the secular Islamic art and also to explain their characteristic foundations. As long tradition of hunting rituals and popular Iranian culture that somehow maintain combat readiness and increase physical and mental battle. With all its usual practice, the walls of the large arch Taq-e Bostan and take the most telling figure is shown. The artwork will also include a lot of detail can be seen in paintings Qusayr amrah Palace. Architecture making of Qusayr amrah Palace is obvious was the imitation of the Parthian and Sassanid architecture features. Where the paintings have appeared Qusayr amrah, the principle of respect for the Iranian arch and Painting and drawing are more patio space; or with designs, arc-shaped stage to show depth and perspective have drawn. The Hunting in Taq-e Bostan is full of movement, vitality, clash between Man and Nature and animals. There are musical instruments and dance and cheer and joy and excitement on stage at first glance the viewer’s aesthetic impact. The king is always the main element in the landscape. This feature is also a difference in the visual and narrative paintings of Qusayr amrah Palace. All of the points mentioned in Taq-e Bostan relief on the viewing angle, the way of design, coordination motifs and patterns of signification are dramatic, but the unprofessional manner in compliance with the Qusayr amrah Palace paintings. Dress styles and designs of clothes at Taq-e Bostan compared Qusayr amrah Palace paintings, Cannot be fully apparent copycat, but resemblance is visible. Of course, showing all the details on the rocks far more difficult than painting on the wall. Qusayr amrah Palace paintings in the use of various garments in various ceremonies observed. And to some extent on the type of clothing people, they identified the Position. The importance of decorated animals, plants and symbolic motifs in Sasanian art is something which still needs to be more thought. Decorative arts of Sassanid era and even more special symbols are unknown; maybe some of them with the same meaning or symbolic meaning in Umayyad art also has influence. The result of this research shows that the representations of Qusayr amrah Palace received a great impact from the high relief of Taq-e Bostan. It means that the creatures of the Omayyad art had either Iranian nationality and has seen the Sassanid Taq, or had access to similar works. However, the object is not to suggest the direct influence of Sassanid style, but to show its legacy and its role developing what is now known as the Islamic Art. Find content display in a prominent role in the great arch Taq-e Bostan which represent hunting scenes, crowned, and the battle royal banquet, the different roles of humans, animals and plants, etc. compare them with the paintings of Qusayr amrah, the Sassanid art has shown. Including aspects of the Sassanid Iranian art in the palace at Taq-e Bostan particularly large patio set can be evaluated: Impact royal life with features of gallantry, bravery and biased view of symmetry and the whole place, manner of dress, the symbols like: Mazda, Mithra, Anahita, moon, sun, fire, Tree of Life, lotus flowers, Pelmet and birds, animals.

Studying the alloys of Islamic period can significantly highly position recognizing the metallurgy of this period. Relevant terminology and recognizing inter-connected compositions have always of the challenges of Islamic period metallurgy. According to scientific texts of Islamic era, there some names of alloys which are unknown yet; the reason was that during that times varieties of science such as metallurgy and making alloys, pharmacy, chemistry and other science were related to alchemy. On one hand, many of alchemists were attempting to keep their secrets, therefore gradually this subject caused that manufacturing methods of some alloys being forgotten. Therefore from each of ancient sources can obtain a little knowledge about ancient metallurgy while this information is also contradictious. This problem in some cases as serious as that scientists such as Biruni were not informed on the some alloying methods during the time. Subject matter which scientists have not paid attention to and caused most of modern metallurgic researchers which have worked about Islamic metallurgy, is to rely on some ancient sources caused many mistakes. For example, most of the researchers have mistaken three different alloys which written in Islamic sources namely، “Sepīd-Rūy”,”Haft-jūsh” and “Tālīghūn “. Experts take these three alloys as “white bronze”, the Copper alloy with high percent of tin; but it cannot be true and in present paper it is attempt to prove that “Sepīd-Rūy”,”Haft-jūsh” and “Tālīghūn “are different alloys as merely “Sepid-Rūy” can be counted as “white bronze”. But if we want To clarify alloys of this period according to written sources and modern data, one should compare written records to new archaeological data, until can exactly be concluded; a subject is aimed by the current paper and on which basis some mistakes of Islamic metallurgy have reformed. Here, in this study three current alloys and controversy named “Sepīd-Rūy”,”Haft-jūsh” and “Tālīghūn”, which have disputed over a century, have studied exactely and comprehensively. On basis of carried out investigations, unlike the current idea these three alloys are diverse from each other as “Haft-jūsh” and “Tālīghūn” cannot be counted as “white bronze” and “Sepid-Rūy “but the only alloy which can be identified as” White Bronze”. Additionally, surveying the scientific texts of Islamic period written on chemistry, many names of alloys have proved in this period which as yet have not studied. In some cases, results from new studies on the element analysis of the ancient metal-works, are proving accuracy on the ancient texts; but problem is that the researchers excluding Copper alloy whit high percent of tin which have named as “White Bronze “, in the other cases have used the term “bronze”, whereas can by referring to the ancient texts and match them with metal works which have analyzed and present here, extract the correct names of alloys. For instance 2 alloys of this group namely, “Patrūy”, an alloy that made of copper and lead, and “Darārūy”, quadruplet alloy of copper, lead, tin, and zinc, are investigated for the first time, as new researches approve their existence. Western scientists knew “Darārūy” as quadruplet alloy but it is better known as its original label.

Both Iranian and Arab army chiefs and corps commanders would apply different types of music in the battlefields, barracks and military camps since very long time ago. Being aware of the influence music has, the campaign heads would benefit this tool to reach their own military goals i.e. encouraging soldiers to fight as well as uplifting them, terrifying the enemy, giving commands, conveying messages, spreading the war news to the soldiers, and eventually entertaining the combatants whenever they were not on duty. Over centuries, music has been employed as an effective tool in exerting military tactics; moreover, it is to be said that the musicians, playing either martial or non-martial instruments, had a particular position in the campaign arrangement. These musicians would include musicians who would play the other instruments with strident sounds such as horn blowers, drummers [players of Kūs (large kettledrums) or Tabīra (waisted drums)] besides those playing daf (Persian frame drum) and barbat/oud (Persian lute-like instrument) and singers whose positions in the campaign arrangement would be determined according to the task each of them had. Martial instrument musicians, in the battlefields and military camps would either spread news and messages to the soldiers or cause the enemy to scare by playing the musical instruments all together simultaneously. On the other hand, the singers and minstrels would accompany the army in order to unwind the campaign and encourage them to fight more zealously and also increase their enthusiasm about the war as well as the concept of self-sacrificing. This type of music could be called encouraging martial music which had some particular traits in terms of melody and content; in these songs, the warriors’ bravery and gallantry would be praised, while their fears and weakness would be bashed and criticized. Rantings (rajazxāni) in which the fighter boasts about his own and his ancestors’ gallantry in a rhythmic way or through singing is one of these kinds. Based on the musical principles, special lays which are both exciting and exhilarating are appropriate for uplifting soldiers and prompting them to fight. Using this above-mentioned encouraging martial music has a long-time background in ancient Iran; the signs of such a thing could be witnessed in the Achaemenid period in the wars of Cyrus with the Assyrians and subsequently during Sassanid period as well. This type of music was also very much in use by the Dark-Age Arabs. After Islam emerged, military consultants would still recommend commanders to continue applying this effective tool in the wars on the battlefields. Focusing on the objectives which were supposed to be achieved by the use of music in the battlefields and military camps is a great assistance to understand the true status of music in the opinion of ancient nations like Iran. It also will finally improve our insight into the Iranian musical culture. The present paper attempts to comprehensively peruse different types of music played in the battlefields and military camps, encouraging martial music in particular, in addition to the desired goals they would procure. Therefore, here, presenting some evidence of the existence and prevalence of encouraging martial music among both the Iranians and Arabs in the course of a period spanning from the rise of Sassanian kings to the Mongolian invasion, the traits of this type of music and the objectives it would cover on the battlefields is going to be analyzed. The necessary information in this regard has been collected through a systematical study on different texts and written material, both poetry and prose, which all belong to over the period from 4th to the 9th centuries A.H. These texts consist of references and evidence of employing music in the battlefields by both the Iranians and the Arabs during our subject period of time.

12th and early 13th centuries are considered as a turning point in the history of Persian metalwork. In this period, Persian metalwork has undergone fundamental changes in terms of production and ornamentation; while casting was the popular method of production for most centuries in the early Islamic period of Iran, wares made of beaten bronze and brass were increasingly produced and therefore new forms and types of metal wares were introduced. Furthermore, vast and unprecedented application of inlay technique—hammering precious metals in the prepared surface of bronzes or brasses—made utterly functional vessels of base metal, as precious and luxurious as silver and gold wares. Inlaying bronzes and brasses with precious metals, not only substituted a multicolor surface for a dull one, facilitated application of various patterns and more themes which absorbed the skills of some of the best artists of the period. From the beginning of the 12th century until Mongol invasion in the second decade of the 13th century, Khurasan province in northeast of greater Iran was famous for producing luxurious inlaid bronzes and brasses. This has been ascertained by the fact that considerable pieces of the period have been signed by artisans whose nisbas associate them with cities located in the greater Khurasan, above all Herat. In addition, historical accounts of the 13th century provides a valuable evidence on Herat being a famous centers for production of inlaid metalwork. While the contribution of Khurasanian School of metalwork to above mentioned developments, it has been clearly determined, that the role of other industrial and cultural cities of these centuries, including Tabarestan, Jibal and Azerbaijan, in formation of this movement, has not yet been clarified. Still, outstanding contribution of some of these centers in Persian metalwork of previous centuries raises apt curiosity regarding probability of existence in these regions of metalworking workshops during the 12th and early 13th centuries. While material evidences highlight the importance of Tabarestan silver working industry during the early Islamic period and astrolabe industry in Isfahan assumed a high status after the 10th century, historical accounts point to outstanding base metal industry of Hamadan during pre-Mongol times - the 9th century writer Ibn Faghih calls attention to Hamadan Metalworkers` reputation and almost a century later Al-Muqaddasi refers to high-tin bronzes of the city. In this research, we are going to find out: 1) if there were other centers of metalwork in west of Khurasan as certain texts indicate and as earlier scholars have conjectured; and 2) if wares produced in these centers can be identified as such. Therefore the main goal of this essay is first to determine non-Khurasanian centers of metalwork of the period and then to introduce distinct features of their products. In order to meet this goal we have used descriptive-analytical method of research and categorized the extant evidences in three groups; 1) pieces found in non-Khurasanian regions of Iran; including a high-tin bronze bowl acquired from Gorgan and a footed dish from Hamedan; 2) pieces signed by craftsmen, associated with non-Khurasanian cities; including a huge cauldron made by a Gazwini artisan and an astrolabe of an Isfahani artist; and 3) pieces with different stylistic features compared to Khurasanian school of metalwork; including an aquamnile in the shape of a cow, its calf and a lion. Having analyzed these evidences, finally we came to conclude that the important non-Khurasanian metalwork centers of Iran in this period were active in Hamadan, Qazvin and Isfahan. At first, most of products of these workshops reveal northeastern aesthetistics regarding to their designs and decorations. However, after the beginning of the 13th century they constituted a distinct style of decoration that mostly influenced by central painted potteries and architectural ornaments of western Iran.

Dar al-arshad of Ardabil as the beginning point of the Safavid movement; as will be proved by the convent of the mausoleum of Sheikh Safi city, the patriarch of the Safavid Sufi sheikh and their important role in the Safavid movement. Although the Safavid era had artistic developments and scholars on the subject of art history are cleared but it seems that there still some issues related to genealogy and religious orientation because of the complexity of the subject and considerable political Safavid era is a controversial issue. The rise of the Safavid dynasty in Iran and the Middle East from the religious and political history viewpoint are special. In other words, the Safavid in the history of the region are not only the role of government policy in 907 AD by Shah Ismail, but since the rise of the dynasty, the Abbasid Caliphate coincided with the start. This era in historical debates by historians is remembered as the pre- Safavid period. By this period, Religion was assigned to the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.
