Evaluating Detectors of Intelligent Transportation System to Manage Traffic

One of the serious problems in megacities is the rapid traffic growth of urban transportation entities, such as streets and highways. Therefore, utilization of the electronic systems and equipment in traffic control must be considered. The data collection is the basis of transportation system analysis. The accurate database regarding traffic characteristics affects the design and implementation of intelligence transportation plans leading to appropriate decisions on transportation improvement. in-vehicle intelligent systems, such as side collision avoidance assist system and blind spot detector is one of the important elements in intelligent transportation system determining the presences or passing vehicles. There are different types of detectors; namely, inductive ring, radar and photographic implemented on Iran road networks. Each of the abovementioned detectors has specific characteristics, which must be evaluated and prioritized based on three criteria named economic, accessibility of technology and preservation. The paper was based on the multi variable decisions making methods of Topsis and Anthropy. The results demonstrated that the inductive ring was the best detector for Iran road network. The photographic and ultimate radar detectors were ranked as the second and the third efficient equipments. The article would help expert’s regarding traffic flow improvement.
