Using Road Markings as a Visual Obstacle For Highway Speed Calming
Author(s):
Abstract:
Speeding is considered to be a contributing factor in most fatal crashes. In an attempt to reduce speed on roadway segments where it is considered to be a safety concern, various methods have been maintained as speed calming treatments. Two different obstacles are mainly used for this
Purpose
physical and nonphysical.Nonphysical elements act as perceptual countermeasures. Perceptual countermeasures are one potential method of influencing motorists to slow down. These perceptual techniques might be useful at lowering speed in a variety of driving situations, such as work zones, curves, roundabouts, and toll plazas. Therefore, evaluation of marking patternalternatives is needed to analyze which patterns are best for encouraging drivers to maintain safe and appropriate speed. In this paper, perceptual speed calming methods have been introduced. The results show that compared to other methods, using nonphysical countermeasures has cost and safety benefits.Language:
