    Background

The interdental papilla plays a crucial role in the esthetic of the smile. Papilla reconstruction surgery is one of the most unpredictable periodontal procedures. This study compared the effect of the non-surgical application of a commercial hyaluronic acid (HA) gel with an autogenous gel named “albumin with platelet-rich fibrin” (Alb-PRF) on interdental papilla reconstruction.

    Methods

This trial was conducted on 46 incomplete interdental papillae with class I or II defects. The papillae were randomly divided into two experimental groups, and commercial HA or Alb-PRF (prepared from the patient’s peripheral blood) was injected into the papillae twice at a 21-day interval. Three and six months after the intervention, photographs were taken from the black triangles and the black surfaces compared to each other. Patient satisfaction and dental plaque index were also evaluated at the end of the study.

    Results

The black triangles’ surfaces significantly decreased over time in both experimental groups (P < 0.001). However, there were no significant differences between the two groups (P = 0.994). The intervention resulted in the patients’ relative satisfaction with the treatment results in both groups. However, the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant (P = 0.965). In addition, no statistically significant differences were observed in plaque index between the two groups (P = 0.566).

    Conclusion

HA or Alb-PRF injection into the incomplete interdental papilla may restore the soft tissue to a great extent and lead to patient satisfaction by reducing the area of black triangles that threaten esthetics; however, more studies are needed.

    Statement of the Problem:

Currently, the reconstruction of bone defects with new platelet concentrates is considered a significant challenge in periodontics.

    Purpose

This study aimed to evaluate advanced- platelet rich fibrin (A-PRF) and leukocyte- and platelet rich fibrin’s (L-PRF) effects on the proliferation and differentiation of MG-63 cells.

    Materials and Method

In this in vitro study, blood samples of five healthy non-smoking volunteers were collected and immediately centrifuged according to the two protocols of Choukroun and Ghanaati, without adding any anticoagulants, to prepare L-PRF and A-PRF. After freezing the clots for one hour, they were crushed and centrifuged once more. After culturing MG-63 cells, the effects of 20%, 10%, 1%, and 0.5% concentrations of A-PRF and L-PRF extracts on cell proliferation and mineralization were evaluated by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay and Alizarin Red staining, respectively.

    Results

Generally, survival and proliferation in the L-PRF group at both time intervals were higher than the A-PRF group and increased with increasing the extract concentration. However, in the A-PRF group, there were no significant differences between the different concentrations, and only the number of cells increased over time. After three days, in the study on mineralization, nodule formation was observed only in the positive control group (osteogenic). In seven days, mineralized nodules were formed in all groups with different concentrations of A-PRF, but not in any of the L-PRF groups.

    Conclusion

According to the results, L-PRF increased proliferation, and A-PRF exerted a positive effect on the differentiation of MG-63 cells.

Reactive soft tissue lesions are common in the oral cavity. These lesions usually occur as a painless non-neoplastic proliferation. Surgical excision of these lesions will cause aesthetic and mucogingival problems in the area. In this case, a prominent lesion in the anterior maxilla of a 40-year-old woman had recurred after two years. Surgical treatment was performed with complete excision of the lesion, curettage and reconstruction by free gingival graft.

    Introduction

Improving the level of oral hygiene is one of the important principles that maintains oral health. There are no studies on the prevalence of dental floss usage and related factors among chronic periodontitis patients in Iran. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of flossing in patients with chronic periodontitis referred to the Dental Clinic of Guilan University of medical sciences in 2019.

    Materials and Methods

In this study, 214 people who had referred to the dental clinic of Guilan University of Medical Sciences for periodontal assessment in 2019, were studied according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. If the relevant hypothesis was established, chisquare test was used and otherwise Fisher exact test was utilized. The software used was SPSS version 24 and significant level of 0.05 was considered in all tests.

    Results

According to the collected data, the number of men and women was almost equal. Most of the subjects were in the age group of 30-49. About half of surveyed people had under diploma education and most of them were married. About one third of these patients have visited a dentist less than a year ago. According to the results, there was no significant relationship between gender and flossing, as well as between visiting the dentist and the severity of the disease. But there was a significant relationship between marriage, education and brushing with the severity of the disease. The severity of the disease was higher in married people and also increased with decreasing level of education and frequency of brushing.

    Conclusion

The prevalence of flossing was similar in men and women and different age groups, but was lesser in people with severe chronic periodontitis and diabetes. So, planning to educate and encourage people to the use dental floss is suggested.
