ObjectivesArtifacts from various dental materials are a disturbing factor which reduces the quality of images obtained from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of tube current on dental material artifacts in CBCT imaging. To assess the amount of artifacts, signal difference to noise ratio indicator was used.Materials And MethodsIn this study, twenty widely-used dental materials were used. The samples were scanned with Soredex SCANORA 3D at two different tube current of 5 and 10 mA while all other conditions remained constant. Using the On-Demand 3D Application software, the circular areas were selected as the region of interest (ROI) at 1, 2 and 4 mm from the edge of the objects image. In each of these ROI areas, information about mean gray value was obtained and signal difference to noise ratio (SDNR) was calculated. Data regarding two scanning conditions were compared using the Wilcoxon statistical analysis.ResultsRegardless of the type of material at 5 mA, SDNR at distances of 1, 2 and 4 mm were .6797, -1.2901, and -2.8608, respectively. SDNR at 10 mA scanning at a distance of 1, 2 and 4 mm were .2363, -1.1889, and -1.1844, respectively. SDNR for all materials at 5 and 10 mA scanning condition were -0.1570, and .2877, respectively and according to the Wilcoxon test there was significant difference (P value = 0.026).ConclusionsBy varying tube current from 5 to 10 mA, SDNR index, and regardless of the type of material, the distance and direction increased. Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a rare and locally aggressive intraosseous tumor with unknown etiology. The mandible is the common site of involvement in the maxillofacial region. However, it is believed that DF can arise in any bone of the body. A wide age distribution has been reported for DF occurrence, extending from birth to the sixth decade of life, with a peak incidence at 10 to 19 years of age. In this study, diagnostic and therapeutic management of a 6-year-old girl with a desmoplastic fibroma of the inferior orbital rim and zygomatic buttress are discussed. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed a mixed lesion in infraorbital rim, which had ill-defined borders and a straight thick bony septum inside the lesion. It also involved the zygomatic process of maxilla and zygomatic bone. According to radiologic concepts, this rare lesion may mimic fibro-osseous, benign and especially malignant lesions. Regarding different treatment plans, identification of this lesion is essential. Furthermore, presence of coarse and irregular or straight septa along with some imaging criteria for malignant lesions such as destruction of the cortex, periosteal reaction and soft tissue invasion would be helpful to differentiate this lesion from malignant and multilocular benign lesions..Keywords: Desmoplastic Fibroma, Zygoma, Bone Neoplasm

IntroductionVertical root fracture (VRF) is common in endodontically treated teeth. Conventional and digital radiographies have limitations for detection of VRFs. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) offers greater detection accuracy of VRFs in comparison with conventional radiography. This study compared the effects of metal artifacts on detection of VRFs by using two CBCT systems. Methods and Materials: Eighty extracted premolars were selected and sectioned at the level of the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ). After preparation, root canals were filled with gutta-percha. Subsequently, two thirds of the root fillings were removed for post space preparation and a custom-made post was cemented into each canal. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups (n=40). In the test group, root fracture was created with Instron universal testing machine. The control teeth remained intact. CBCT scans of all teeth were obtained with either New Tom VGI or Soredex Scanora 3D. Three observers analyzed the images for detection of VRF. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) for VRF detection and percentage of probable cases were calculated for each imaging system and compared using non-parametric tests considering the non-normal distribution of data. The inter-observer reproducibility was calculated using the weighted kappa coefficient.ResultsThere were no statistically significant differences in sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV between the two CBCT systems.ConclusionThe effect of metal artifacts on VRF detection was not significantly different between the two CBCT systems.Keywords: Cast Post, CBCT, Cone, Beam Computed Tomography, Vertical Root Fracture

The Applications of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography in Endodontics: A Review of LiteratureBy producing undistorted three-dimensional images of the area under examination, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems have met many of the limitations of conventional radiography. These systems produce images with small field of view at low radiation doses with adequate spatial resolution that are suitable for many applications in endodontics from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up.
