Journal of Operation and Automation in Power Engineering, Volume:4 Issue: 1, Winter - Spring 2016, PP 83 -92Nowadays, the most generated electrical energy is consumed by three-phase induction motors. Thus, in order to carry out preventive measurements and maintenances and eventually employing high-efficiency motors, the efficiency evaluation of induction motors is vital. In this paper, a novel and efficient method based on improved big bang-big crunch (I-BB-BC) algorithm is presented for efficiency estimation in the induction motors. In order to estimate the induction motors efficiency, the measured current, the power factor and the input power are applied to the proposed method and an appropriate objective function is presented. The main advantage of the proposed method is efficiency evaluation of induction motor without any intrusive test. Moreover, a new effective and improved version of BB-BC algorithm is introduced. The presented modifications can improve the accuracy and speed of the classic version of algorithm. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed method, a comparison with other traditional methods and intelligent optimization algorithms is performed. Keywords: Efficiency estimation, Improved big bang, big crunch algorithm, Induction motor, Measurement

International Journal of Optimization in Civil Engineering, Volume:6 Issue: 3, Summer 2016, PP 433 -445The big bang-big crunch (BB-BC) algorithm is a popular metaheuristic optimization technique proposed based on one of the theories for the evolution of the universe. The algorithm utilizes a two-phase search mechanism: big-bang phase and big-crunch phase. In the big-bang phase the concept of energy dissipation is considered to produce disorder and randomness in the candidate population while in the big-crunch phase the randomly created solutions are shrunk into a single point in the design space. In recent years, numerous studies have been conducted on application of the BB-BC algorithm in solving structural design optimization instances. The objective of this review study is to identify and summarize the latest promising applications of the BB-BC algorithm in optimal structural design. Different variants of the algorithm as well as attempts to reduce the total computational effort of the technique in structural optimization problems are covered and discussed. Furthermore, an empirical comparison is performed between the runtimes of three different variants of the algorithm. It is worth mentioning that the scope of this review is limited to the main applications of the BB-BC algorithm and does not cover the entire literature. Keywords: structural optimization, metaheuristic techniques, big bang, big crunch algorithm, global optimization, stochastic search, optimal design

International Journal of Optimization in Civil Engineering, Volume:4 Issue: 2, Spring 2014, PP 233 -259Computational cost of metaheuristic based optimum design algorithms grows excessively with structure size. This results in computational inefficiency of modern metaheuristic algorithms in tackling optimum design problems of large scale structural systems. This paper attempts to provide a computationally efficient optimization tool for optimum design of large scale steel frame structures to AISC-LRFD specifications. To this end an upper bound strategy (UBS), which is a recently proposed strategy for reducing the total number of structural analyses in metaheuristic optimization algorithms, is used in conjunction with an exponential variant of the well-known big bang-big crunch optimization algorithm. The performance of the UBS integrated algorithm is investigated in the optimum design of two large-scale steel frame structures with 3860 and 11540 structural members. The obtained numerical results clearly reveal the usefulness of the employed technique in practical optimum design of large-scale structural systems even using regular computers. Keywords: Structural optimization, metaheuristic search techniques, big bang, big crunch algorithm, upper bound strategy, large, scale steel frames, AISC, LRFD

In this paper a discrete Big Bang-Big Crunch algorithm is applied to optimal design of reinforced concrete planar frames under the gravity and lateral loads. Optimization is based on ACI 318-08 code. Columns are assumed to resist axial loads and bending moments, while beams resist only bending moments. Second-order effects are also considered for the compression members, and columns are checked for their slenderness and their end moments are magnified when necessary. The main aim of the BB-BC process is to minimize the cost of material and construction of the reinforced concrete frames under the applied loads such that the strength requirements of the ACI 318 code are fulfilled. In the process of optimization, the cost per unit length of the sections is used for the formation of the subsequent generation. Three bending frames are optimized using BB-BC and the results are compared to those of the genetic algorithm. Keywords: Optimization, Reinforced concrete plane frame, Big Bang, Big Crunch algorithm

International Journal of Optimization in Civil Engineering, Volume:1 Issue: 3, Summer 2011, PP 495 -505Engineering optimization needs easy-to-use and efficient optimization tools that can be employed for practical purposes. In this context, stochastic search techniques have good reputation and wide acceptability as being powerful tools for solving complex engineering optimization problems. However, increased complexity of some metaheuristic algorithms sometimes makes it difficult for engineers to utilize such techniques in their applications. Big- Bang Big-Crunch (BB-BC) algorithm is a simple metaheuristic optimization method emerged from the Big Bang and Big Crunch theories of the universe evolution. The present study is an attempt to evaluate the efficiency of this algorithm in solving engineering optimization problems. The performance of the algorithm is investigated through various benchmark examples that have different features. The obtained results reveal the efficiency and robustness of the BB-BC algorithm in finding promising solutions for engineering optimization problems. Keywords: Engineering optimization, benchmark problems, metaheuristics, Big Bang, Big crunch algorithm, optimum design
