Background
Toxocariasis is a parasitic disease with global distribution. Many paratenic or transport hosts have been identified as the sources of infection, including vertebrates such as birds and humans. The definitive hosts of Toxocara are dogs and cats whose parasites live in their guts. Hence, the diagnosis of the disease in these animals is important.
ObjectiveThe present study was performed using the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method to diagnose toxocariasis.
Materials and MethodsIn the present study, 60 samples of pet feces were collected and subsequently evaluated by direct smear, formalin-ether, and LAMP.
ResultsToxocara infection in dogs by microscopic and formal ether methods and LAMP method was 10% and 13.3%, respectively, while feline infection with this parasite was not observed either microscopically or molecularly.
ConclusionThe present findings revealed that pet dogs can be considered as a source of infection for humans. Therefore, it is recommended that animal owners receive the necessary training to prevent the risks of transmitting zoonotic diseases.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to evaluate parasitic infections in children with allergic rhinitis (AR) referring to a tertiary center in Egypt.MethodsA case-control study was conducted on 139 children (78 males) with allergic rhinitis aged from 6 to 14 years attending Assiut University Hospitals, as well as 70 healthy children as controls. All participants underwent stool analysis, serology for IgG antibodies to Toxocara canis, IgE antibodies to Ascaris lumbricoides, serum IL-5 levels, and urinary leukotriene E4.ResultsAR patients showed significantly higher values of absolute eosinophilic count (AEC), IL-5, urinary leukotriene E4, and total IgE than controls. Anti-Ascaris IgE and IgG anti- Toxocara canis were positive in 18.7% and 18% of patients respectively. Giardia infection was detected in stools of 20.1% of patients. Patients with parasitic infections showed significantly higher AEC, serum IL-5, and urinary leukotriene E4 values than those with negative infection and controls.ConclusionsOur study revealed that infections with Ascaris, Toxocara, and Giardia were more common among AR children compared to healthy children and they were significantly associated with disease severity so the infection with these parasites may be a risk factor for AR among Upper Egyptian children.Keywords: Allergic Rhinitis, Ascaris lumbricoides, Giardia lamblia, Toxocara Species, Egypt}

BackgroundHuman toxocariasis is one of the zoonotic helminth diseases that is usually occurred with exposure to contaminated soil. Both Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati are considered the causative agents of Toxocara infection.ObjectivesThis survey was intended to provide data on the Toxocara species eggs contamination in soil samples in the public parks of Karaj, Iran.Materials And MethodsThis study was carried out among 200 soil samples collected from 12 public parks between August and September 2016 to examine the soil contamination with Toxocara species eggs. Soil samples were tested for the presence of Toxocara eggs using sucrose flotation method.ResultsPrevalence of Toxocara species eggs in soil samples collected from public parks was 36.4%. The highest number of eggs recovered from 200 g of soil was 20. A total of 200 eggs were recovered and 7.6% were fully developed to embryonated egg stages. The contamination rate in the third region in 4 studied areas was higher than the other regions. A similar tendency was observed in park areas, so that parks higher than 5000 m2 were highly contaminated.ConclusionAccording to the results of this study, soils of the public parks in Karaj are one of the main risk factors for human toxocariasis.Keywords: Toxocara species, Public parks, Soil samples, Karaj, Iran}
