Peer review plays a vital and major role to determine the fate of manuscripts submitted to international academic journals. The present study analyzed the discourse structure and the language use of a corpus containing 43 peer review reports from journals from three disciplines (i.e., Applied Linguistics, Accounting, and Sociology). This study analyzed the most frequent discourse moves, negative, and positive expressions used in minor revisions, major revisions, and rejected manuscripts. The findings of this study showed that all discourse moves appeared in all peer review reports but two moves “Summarizing Judgment” and “Conclusion and Recommendation” were the most frequent discourse moves in all peer-review categories. The findings also revealed that the words “well”, “good”, and “original” were the most frequently-used positive words, while the words “unclear”, “inconsistent”, and “poor” were the most frequently-used negative words in the analyzed peer-review reports. The study recommends some points to be considered in future research on this topic.

Ideology is a crucial factor that has an impact on translation products and processes.  Political news texts are among those linguistic texts that undergo the effects of ideology. Translators in the process of translation transfer the semantic and ideological meanings of the given text and may leave their ideological traces in the target text. The present study aimed to critically analyze the impacts of the translator’s ideology on manipulating the discourse structure in translating political news. To this aim, 50 Iranian English Translation students (master’s degree) from some significant State and Azad universities in Iran were randomly asked for translating a political news text. To achieve this objective, the performance of 50 Translation students on translating a political news text was analyzed by two experienced translation raters based on Van Dijk’s ideological square and his categorization of ideological discourse structure. The results of critical discourse analysis of translation texts indicated that participants ideologically manipulated the eight elements of categorization of the discourse structure of Van Dijk’s CDA framework, including the disclaimer, polarization, presumption, authority, categorization, repetition, euphemism, and victimization, to emphasize the positive aspects of the ‘Us’ group, de-emphasizing the negative aspects of ‘Us’ group, emphasizing the negative aspects of ‘Them’ group, and de-emphasizing the positives aspects of ‘Them’ group. In addition, categorization and victimization were the most frequent discourse structures employed by Translation students to reveal their ideology in Translation.

This study investigated the effectiveness of discourse structure-based graphic organizers (GOs) on students’ reading comprehension. Seventy learners were randomly divided in two equal experimental and control groups. They took a pre-test of reading comprehension. Then the experimental group analyzed the textual structures based on the frameworks of GOs and discussed the cohesive and coherent devices in each passage while the control group read the passage and do the textbook exercises. Data analysis revealed that GOs significantly affected the student's reading comprehension. The implications suggest that familiarizing the learners with graphical structures could facilitate reading comprehension.
