Hakim Tirmizi's ideas in Anthropology

Hakim Tirmizi, a well-known mystic of Transoxiana, is one the mystics having considerable ideas in the field of anthropology. Thus, the main problematic of this essay is investigating the viewpoints of him concerning the quidity of man, the dimensions and layers of his/her existence, as well as the goals and path in the life. The method applied is grounded-base systematization of teachings with an analytical approach in the course of re-reading of the thought of Hakim Tirmizi. A main part of Hakim Tirmizi's anthropology is connected with man's creation and his/her creational dimensions. Man as God's caliph on the earth, having a divine structure and being the appearance of God's attributes, is a special creation. One of the main characteristics of man is essential connection of wisdom and knowledge with his/her existence. This perfectionist creed on man's creation is the basis for Hakim Tirmizi to think that even the most terrestrial layers of man's existence has a right in creation which should be satisfied. Hakim stressing on the concept of worship as the goal of man- as a Quranic teaching- consider the climax of worship which names it ubūdat, freedom from all the ties. On this basis, to pace in the path of ubūdat, remains even in afterlife and this progressive movement to perfection has no end. Tirmizi studies man's existence in three layers: heart, breast and soul from which the heart is the divine layer, the soul is terrestrial one and the breast is a middle area and that is why the latter is a front for internal challenges of human being.
