Personality characteristics, irrational beliefs, and communication skills as predictors school counselor's job performance

Given that human resources are considered as one of the most important assets of any organization, investigation and identification of factors associated with these resources, which can be effective on job performance, have become increasingly important. The purpose of the present study was to predict the counselors’ job performance based on their personality characteristics, irrational beliefs and communication skills. This study used a descriptive – correlational method. Population of the study consisted of all the counselors working in Tehran schools during the academic year 94-95. From the population, a sample consisting of 283 people were selected using random sampling method. The study sample responded to Paterson's job performance questionnaire, NEO Personality Inventory, Ahvaz irrational beliefs inventory and Barton G’s communication skills. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multivariate regression analysis (enter). The results showed that personality traits of extraversion and conscientiousness, language skills positively and irrational beliefs negatively predict counselors ‘job performance. Results can used to select , train and empower the programs of school counselors.
