The Role of Types A and D Personality in Predicting Patience and its Components among University Students

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of types A and D personality in predicting patience and its components among university students. The statistical population of the present study was all of university students studying at Shiraz Payame Noor University in the 2014- 2015 academic year. Two hundred and seventeen university students were recruited among them via cluster sampling method. The participants answered the Patience Scale (Khormaei, Farmani, and Soltani, 2014), Type A personality Questionnaire (Batigun & Sahin, 2006) and Type D personality Scale (Denollet, 2005). The results of correlation indicated negative and significant relationships between patience and its components and types A and D personality. The results of simultaneous and stepwise multiple regression analyses also showed that type A personality and the two subscales of type D personality negatively and significantly predicted patience and its components. Moreover, Negative Affect as one of the subscales of type D personality played greater role in predicting patience and its components. According to the results of this study, it is recommended to psychologists especially health psychologists to apply educational strategies of patience in order to promote mental health and prevent cardiovascular diseases among patients with types A or D personality.
