Sociological Analysis of the Relationship between Types of Leisure Time with Social Health of University Students

Social health is one of the most basic social welfare criteria of any society. Social thinkers believe that one of the factors contributing to the promotion of social health of people is leisure time. Therefore, the present study aims to determine the relationship between leisure time and its types and social health. In this paper, Keyes's theory is used to measure social health and Dumazedier’s theory for measuring leisure time types. The research method is a survey based on a researcher-made questionnaire among 300 BA students of Pardis branch of Azarbaijan Shahid Madani University in 94-95 academic year using stratified sampling method. Findings of the research indicate that there is a meaningful direct relationship between leisure time and its types and social health of students. The results of regression analysis showed that 25% of the changes in social health is related to the types of individual’s leisure activities. Among leisure-time types, social leisure has the most and practical leisure has the least impact on students’ social health. It should be noted that the effect of physical and artistic leisure on social health is not meaningful.
