A review on the role of algae bioactive compounds in the cosmetic industry.
Water expanses are rich sources of bioactive materials for the cosmetics industry. Macro and Microalgae are rich in proteins, amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, pigments, polyphenols and minerals such as copper, iron and zinc which play an important role in providing body with the nutrients it needs, modifying its diet and they also have hydration, nutrition, whitening and skin protection. Macro and Microalgae have numerous bioactive compounds in their structure and they are used in various industries such as food prossesing, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Many algae-derived secondary metabolites have topical applications, including protecting the skin from UV, preventing dry skin and reducing wrinkles. Also, due to the presence of antioxidant compounds, they used as anti-aging ingredients. The production of a variety of cosmetics using the bioactive compounds in the algae extract, because they come from natural sources, is increasing. In this study, although the effects of some of these compounds are described, but the effect of algae in the cosmetics industry in terms of biological compounds and mechanisms involved in their functions are still unclear. For this reason, most biomolecules in a variety of algae species have not yet been studied and are not used for cosmetic purposes.
