The Problem of Deviated Eyes in Portraits by Sani’-ul-Molk
The present study investigates on the deviation of eyes in portraits made by Sani’-ul-Molk, the Qajar royal painter. Analyzing the exact visual and technical features of the works in the course of his artistic life, it assesses the possible causes affecting the deviation in eyes, either accidental or intentional. Through the analysis, different scenarios including his technical weakness, the reality in subjects, symbolic codes etc. were articulated as well as evaluated. The results shows two possibilities: either technical problems magnified in the light of stylistic traditional norms, or intentional reproduction of symbolic codes referring to the middle ages’ religious painting in Italy. Though a combination of both possibilities could be valid. The study is fundamental and takes in the descriptive – analysis method.
