Considering of the sanctity and polytheism of naming likes “Abd al-Nabi” from the perspective of Wahhabism
According to some Wahhabi scholars, naming after the names like Abd al-Nabi is forbidden. Some other Wahhabis consider it a polytheistic practice. The following are the reasons for this verdict: Consensus, the cause of revelation in the verse 190 of Surah A'raf, the monopoly in God’s worshiping, the narration of the “beloved names” and the renaming of some companions by the Holy Prophet. Few Wahhabi scholars maintain that the cause of revelation in the above-mentioned verse is the reason why this practice is polytheistic. Studies have shown that the above-mentioned consensus is nothing more than a claim and also the cause of the revelation in the verse 190 in Surah A'raf is also damaged and weak both in document and its text. Furthermore, naming by the names like Abdun - Nabi has nothing to do with the issue of worshiping, and the narration of “Ahab al-Asma” does not indicate on sanctity of naming. Finally, what has been recorded in history proves that not only there were some names like Abd al-Nabi and the Holy prophet did not change them, but also there are some evidences proving the validity and popularity of this type of naming.
