Abstract:
Semantics is a method of text analysis. One of Izutsu's innovations in the application of semantics is seen in the analysis of the semantic system of the Holy Qur’an. The semantic field theory is considered one of his famous theories in this scientific field. Each of the pivotal words in the Holy Qur’an has a field of connotations, and in the interaction of these fields and the connection between them, the concepts and meanings of the words of the Holy Qur’an are known better and more accurately. As studies in semantic sciences progressed, some observations were made on them. One such observation is the issue of “gradual style inclusion” which aims to complete the meaning and help to comprehend the semantic field of words. The gradual method is a process derived from the revealed interpretation of the Holy Qur’an and includes the study of the noble surahs and verses in the context of their gradual revelation. In this article, an attempt was made to find out the effect of “including the gradual method” in semantics by studying the semantic field of the word piety in association with the word patience in a descriptive and analytical manner. We have come to the conclusion that the word piety was mentioned and repeated in the Holy Qur’an according to the progression of the gradual descent of the Meccan and Medinan surahs, from one foot to another. In addition, the word piety was used alongside the word patience in a gradual process in two areas:The first field is preliminary, and the second field is completion, as it is considered a complement to the first field. Given the atmosphere and societal requirements at the time of the revelation of the Meccan surahs, patience was initially mentioned as a basis for achieving piety. Whereas patience was considered necessary to achieve piety, then with the revelation of the Qur’an in the next stage and in a complementary ratio, both patience and piety became meanings, each playing its role independently alongside the other. Both patience and piety are necessary for the perfection and elevation of the human soul.
