Abstract:

The current investigation pertains to the compensatory lengthening process within the Borujerdi dialect. In this study, two theoretical frameworks, optimality and Morai, are applied to analyze the data. The inquiry revealed the presence of two distinct forms of compensatory lengthening in the specified dialect: first, compensatory vowel lengthening which is caused by the deletion of the glottal consonants /h/ and /ʔ/, and the other which is caused by vowel deletion. These two consonants represent the sole consonantal elements within the Borujerdi dialect that possess a syllabic weight. The initial phenomenon involves compensatory lengthening of vowels resulting from the deletion of glottal consonants /h/ and /ʔ/, while the second phenomenon is attributed to vowel deletion. When either the glottal consonants or vowels are deleted, their mora is then reallocated to the preceding short vowel. The short vowels undergo a transition to double-moraic vowels following the absorption of the free mora associated with glottal consonants and the omission of a vowel. The investigation revealed that this phenomenon takes place in this dialect, alongside the three phonological environments outlined by Bickmore, within an additional
