Effects of Personality-Event Congruency Hypothesis on Depression Symptoms: A Test Using Structural Equation Modeling

Message:
Abstract:
The purpose of the present study is to test personality-event congruency hypothesis on depression symptoms using structural equation modeling. It was assumed that two variables of sociotropy and autonomy had causal effects on depression symptoms through perception of interpersonal events and achievement of stressful events, respectively. The sample consisted of 357 participants (123 male and 234 female) of undergraduate students who were selected using stratified random sampling method. Participants responded to Personal Style Inventory (PSI-II), Life Experiences Survey (LES), and Beck Depression Inventory. Fitness of the proposed model was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) through AMOS-18 and SPSS-18 software packages. Bootstrap procedure was used to estimate the indirect effects. The primary analysis indicated that the hypothesized model had a poor fit with the data. Better fit was achieved by applying some modifications in the final model.
