Survey the effect of two methods, infusion pump and intramuscular injection on the pain control after abdominal surgery of patients admitted to Amir Al Momenin hospital in Ahwaz

Pain after surgery is one of the most common reasons for patients’ fear of surgery. Lack of pain relief after surgery can lead to complications after surgery، prolonged duration of hospitalization and delayed recovery. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of two methods، intramuscular injection and infusion pump on the pain control of patients after abdominal surgery. This clinical trial study through simple sampling was performed on 60 patients referred to Amir Al Momenin hospital for abdominal surgery in Ahwaz in 1389. Patients were randomly assigned into two groups of patient’s controlling their pain through infusion pump (intervention group) and intramuscular injection (control groups). For gathering data demographic information، medical complications and the visual analog scale VAS were used. Pain severity، analgesic drug consumption and drug side effects during 24 hours after surgery was assessed every 6 hours. The data were analyzed by SPSS software، ANOVA and repeated measurement test. There was a significant difference between the two groups in relation to the mean of pain severity and the extent of drug consumption after abdominal surgery، where as the pain level in the intervention group was less than the control group (P=0/03)، but the mean of drug consumption in the intervention group was more than the control group (P<0/001). The results of this study indicated that the pain level in the intervention group less than the control group، but the level of drug consumption in this group more than the control group.
