Energy Dissipation due to Deflector in Simple Flip Bucket Spillway and Flip Bucket Spillway with Approach Channel

Message:
Abstract:
Flip buckets are commonly used to discharge flow away from a hydraulic structure when energy has to be dissipated for a flow velocity larger than about 20 m/s. One way to increase energy dissipation in flip bucket spillways is a deflector application. Deflector is a wedge-shaped structure which creates changes in part of flow trajectory of bucket. Experiments on two models of flip bucket at the end of ogee spillway were conducted using three lengths 3، 6 and 9 cm of deflector and four discharges of 10، 15، 20 and 25 l/s for the first model and three discharges of 15، 20 and 25 l/s for the second model. The deflectors were set with four angles of 12˚، 22˚، 32˚ and 42˚. Data analysis showed that the deflectors with different angles caused changes in energy dissipation. The more the Froude number، the more was the amount of energy dissipation. The greatest energy dissipation belonged to the bucket with 6cm deflector length at setting angle of 22˚c which at the froud No. 3. 4 Was 34. 6% higher than the energy dissipation in without deflector bucket. The second model had more energy dissipation than the first model.
