Probiotics in Iran: National and International Standards

Abstract:
Diversity of probiotic products is increasing in the markets of Iran; therefore، the investigation of this issue is of prime importance. In this regard، the aim of this research is investigating current status of production and control and surveillance of probiotic products in the country. To do so، data from ISIRI and reference laboratory of microbiology in standard institute have been used. The results showed that ten types of probiotic foods are available in the market. Also it was found that 24 standard logos have been granted to yoghurt and doogh، probiotic. The majority of given logos are for yoghurt probiotic. Six national standards are developed about probiotics. In the development of these standards only enumeration of probiotic strains is considered at106 cfu/gr. The only seven laboratories in country are certificate for probiotic products and laboratory of microbiology in standard institute work as a reference laboratory. For achieving the desired status، challenges and solutions are presented in detail.
