Transportation of Dangerous Goods in Road Tunnels and its Impact on Tunnel Safety

Due to the increasing need of industrial countries, developed countries and developing countries, to petroleum and chemical products and Gradual replacement of fossil fuel and nuclear energy around the world and the concentration of producing these substances in certain geographic and industries regions and variation of production's place and consumption's place, the need to transport of these materials are obviously essential.Most of these materials, including radioactive materials, hazardous materials are placed in these categories. Therefore, the transportation of these materials should be dependent on observance of special safety products in this category. These knowledge come from the collection of past experiences carry disasters. The management of this knowledge, in order to prevent re-occurrence of such events, is necessary to improve safety, because these disasters are not only involved in the accident rate but also in degradation of economy and environment’s cycle and it has influence on infrastructure (including tunnels) and also it plays essential role on disorder and disruption of traffic flow and irreparable damage to economic, and environment.This study investigates factors that influencing the accidents occurred in the tunnels, with an overview of the factors affecting the transport of dangerous goods and solutions and preventive measures for risk management in shipping dangerous goods in road tunnels will be discussed.
