The complexities and evolution of the concepts of information and information behavior

This paper reviews the two major concepts in the field of information behavior (IB), namely "information" and "information seeking." A documentary research method and review of the literature were used. The word information is the smallest particle and the most essential element in the area of information behavior. The second one is the phrase "information behavior" itself. Review of the literature shows that the word information dates back to the 14th century when it emerged in the works of Chaucer. It is also revealed that there is no consensus about the real meaning of this concept, and every author and scholar may interpret it as he/she wishes or understands so that up to 29 meanings have emerged so far. The problem seems to arise due to the multiplicity of this word in many different disciplines. Also, the umbrella term information behavior is not agreed upon its nature, meaning, and origin either. Scholars have their own interpretations based on their personal understandings. Based on this paper, focusing on the importance of information behavior as an important instinctive, socio-cognitive ability. Further, the paper emphasizes that we are just beginning to understand the complex nature of information behavior including its origin, evolution and development.
