Quality of life of upper and lower amputated veterans

War has lots of catastrophic consequences on the health of people such as amputation. Amputated persons experience more changes in their quality of life following the amputation. Combat related amputation is sudden and unexpected and coping with it is hard. Acceptance is expected during the time after taking medial- health services. The purpose of this study is to assess the quality of life of amputated veterans following almost 20 years after ending the war. This research is descriptive survey by using data from 120 veterans were randomly selected from the amputated veterans list (60 lower & and 60 upper) of the Fars region of the Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans. The veterans filled out the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). The result showed the average score for SF-36 full-scale was 40.64 and the average score for physical component scale and mental component scale were 37.93 and 43.43. Although the averages in comparison with national or international normative data are below the means, but if we define a range around the mean, most of SF-36 subscale will fall within two standard deviations. There was no significant difference between the quality of life of the lower & and upper Amputated group. Our results did not support the previous finding that reported the quality of life of amputated veterans is significantly below the mean also our results did not support the hypothesis that the lower limb amputees experience worse quality of life in comparison with upper limb amputees.
