Conventionalized Impoliteness versus Non-Conventionalized (Implicational) Impoliteness; an Overview of Some of the Concepts Presented by Jonathan Culpeper on Verbal Impoliteness

Message:
Abstract:

The present study investigated the concept Conventionality and its relationship with verbal impoliteness in Culpeper's view. The reason of presenting this paper was the importance of this concept in the field of (Im)politeness, specially in Persian studies. First, based on (1) speech acts, (2) discourse/ communicative/ pragmatic strategies and (3) locutions views, one of the challenging questions, e.i. "Is (im)politeness inherent in language?", was disscussed. Then, after reviewing Terkourafi's frame-based model on politeness, conventionality concept in impoliteness was investigated and the similarities and differences of the so called concept between the two domains were considered. After that, the three scales related to conventionalized impoliteness, i.e. the conventionalization scale, the context-spanning scale and the gravity offence scale, and their connectivity was discussed. In the end of this part some defining factors in investigating conventionalized behavior such as intensifiers, taboos, suprasegmental elements and some non-verbal features were introduced. Finally, non-conventionalized impoliteness and its classification including form-driven, convention-driven and context-driven behaviors were discussed.
