Cultural Particularism and Reproduction of Religious Identities: With an Emphasis on Islamic Awakening Movement

Globalization is a multidimensional process and culture is one of the main dimensions of this process. Although globalization of culture means cultural equalization in the world, we must not forget reproduction of Islamic identity and culture. Unlike the common viewpoints that say globalization leads to popularization and cultural equalization, solid evidences show that the progress in communication technologies has facilitated reproduction of diversified cultural identities. On this basis, this study intends to have a glance at globalization phenomenon, explain about some of its specifications and then try to classify two major viewpoints on the culture of globalization in a bid to remove some ambiguities. In the first viewpoint, we will study globalization of culture in the context of Western cultural hegemony (cultural imperialism) or sovereignty of Anglo-American culture while expressing our critical points. In the second viewpoint, we will study globalization of culture in parallel with reproduction of Islamic identity in the context of cultural particularism. Studying both viewpoints, this paper concludes that the second viewpoint, despite some faults with it, has managed to give a better understanding of the research and reproduction of Islamic awakening in terms of cultural globalization.
