Grounding risk assessment from a risk management prospect

Abstract:
Ship grounding accidents; as one of the major types of maritime accidents; are significant failures putting in danger maritime transportation systems. Here, risks associated with such failures could be catastrophic for the system, society and the environment. So, its evaluation as well as its management importance is a clear cut. Since risk is generally defined as a product of the probability and the consequence of an accident, this article with the aim of explaining the basics, provides the concepts. Besides, existing risk models developed for ship grounding risk analysis are discussed from a risk management perspective. Uncertainty in output, difficulties with updating for new information or new variable, weakness in adaptability with new situations, opacity in variables interaction as well as implementing dynamic variables are among problems with such risk assessment models.
