Comparing the Craving and Psychological Well-being in Patients under Methadone Maintenance Treatment and Active Heroin Users

Abstract:
Background
Craving is a psychological factor that plays an important role in therapeutic consequences and has a dynamic interaction with mental health.
Objective
The present study aims to compare the craving and psychological well-being between individuals under maintenance treatment and individuals with opium abusers.
Methods
This study is a causal comparative design. A total of 30 male heroin users and 50 patients with methadone maintenance therapy were selected using purposeful sampling method and snowball method. Data were collected using Psychological Well-being Questionnaire and Usage Craving Questionnaire and were analyzed using independent t-test, Multivariable Analyze of Variance (MANOVA) and Pierson correlation tests.
Results
The findings showed that psychological well-being between the group of methadone users and heroin users in all three components of emotional, psychological, and social were different. The results highlighted the importance of the recovery process and avoiding the substance in improving the well-being and reducing the stress.
