A Study of the Historical Geography of Kharg Island: Introducing the Tombs and Religious Structures of the Historical Period

Kharg Island is located 30 km west of Bandar Rig and 35 km west of Bandar Genaveh. Due to its particular strategic location, it has attracted the attention of different ethnic groups and nations during various historical periods. It houses some historical remains and monuments from the Akaemenid, Parthian, and Sassanid periods, the most important of which are grave-temples of Palmyrene and Nestorian church. Moreover, there are several other ancient remains belonging to different historical periods on Kharg Island including the plan of a fire temple, dolmen tombs, a stone campus, a stone tomb, engraving of a kind of ancient game on the rocky coast of the Island, and an Akaemenid inscription. Following the field method and relying on library studies, the present paperexplores the historical geography of Kharg Island and introduces some of its tombs and religious structures.
