Modelling the effect of red-light violation on the capacity of signalized intersections (Case Study: Isfahan)
One of the frequent aspects of lawlessness at signalized intersections is red-light violation (RLV). In addition to its adverse effect on intersection safety, RLV can cause delay in the start-up of the vehicles in the next phase defined as “green flow”. In this research, the adverse effect of RLV on the effective green time and intersections capacity is evaluated using data collected from one signalized intersection in the City of Esfahan, Iran. By using a cellular network at this intersection, it was shown that if there was no all-red interval in the intersection phasing system, RLV can decrease intersection capacity up to about 5%. This amount decreases by increasing the all-red interval duration. Also, the drivers’ behaviours in the green flow can have significant effect on the reduction of the intersection capacity.
