Investigation the Possibility of Using Torbat-Heydarieh Urban Wastewater for Irrigation of Agricultural Products

Reuse of municipal wastewater, especially for irrigation of agricultural crops due to reduced water extraction from conventional limited resources, has been of interest to researchers in recent years. In the use of wastewater for irrigation, it is necessary to pay attention to its quality. In arid and semi-arid regions, the major crop irrigation is using groundwater resources. Therefore, the use of wastewater treatment plants for irrigation is a reasonable solution to reduce the adverse effects of groundwater abstraction. In this study, chemical and microbial analysis of treated wastewater of Torbat-Heydariyeh municipal wastewater plant for crops irrigation was investigated. According to the results of this study, the wastewater is in terms of quality characteristics of the wastewater in accordance with WHO and FAO standards and is suitable for irrigation of agricultural products. The results of chemical analysis of wastewater showed that total dissolved solids, dissolved Oxygen, biological required Oxygen, chemical required Oxygen, caloric, magnesium, sodium and calcium, phosphate and chloride in wastewater treatment plant. According to the World Health Organization (FAO) and FAO standards, the amount of nitrate in the treatment plant is above the permitted level and some precautions should be considered for use in agricultural applications.
