Effect of chitosan on quorum sensing system of Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae 3289

Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae is the causal agent of several bacterial diseases on a wide range of horticultural and agricultural herbaceous or woody plants. Increasing resistance to antibiotics and undesirable side effects arising from their usage, enhance the trend of finding alternative methods in controlling plant bacterial pathogens using compounds such as chitosan as a safe way.

In this research the effect of different dilutions of Low Molecular Weight (50-190 kDa) chitosan were evaluated on the quorum sensing system of P. syringae pv. syringae B728a biosensor. Finally the effect of the lowest selected dilution was assessed on P. syringae pv. syringae 3289 swarming motility and biofilm formation.

0.01gr/l LMW chitosan not only could control quorum sensing system in biosensor bacterium, but also decreased P. syringae pv. syringae 3289 swarming motility and biofilm formation (that plays important role in plant colonization and determine virulence severity of this bacterium).

According to chitosan role in controlling P. syringae pv. syringae quorum sensing system and its swarming motility and biofilm formation (that are two important factors in this bacterium virulence) and with increasing resistance to antibiotices in bacterial pathogeneses, using compounds such as chitosan can be a good replacement for controlling these pathogens.
