Narrative Analysis of Short Story of "Dash Akol" Based on Greimas Discourse of State and Action Systems

Abstract:
The present study was dedicated to a narrative analysis on the short story of "Dash Akol", written by Sadeq Hedayat, based on Greimas discourse of state and action systems. The main aim of this study was to find story structures intended by Greimas for comparing the discourse of state and action systems according to their complication and mutual effectiveness, and to investigate the reasons of failure in moving from discourse of action system to discourse of state system, or in other words, discourse cycle in this story. In the narrative analysis of this story, based on discourse of action system, we found Dash Akol and Kaka Rostam as potential and actual action-states. One of them (Dash Akol) tried to keep a champion value object and generous character, and the other one (Kak Rostam) tried to obtain the same value object in a parallel way through creating an interactive relation of induction kind. But, from the middle of the story, a female character called Marjan, as another value object, involved Dash Akol in a love story, so it caused a delay in the actions of Dash Akol.
