Investigating Iran's defense role in countering the ISIS terrorist group in Iraq
With the formation of ISIS in Iraq in 2014 and its terrorist acts, Iran's national interests and security in the West Asian security environment were affected, as not only did the group define its area of operation internationally, but it also spread insecurity as it advanced toward Iran's borders. The ideology of ISIL, along with the support of the West and its regional allies, was considered a threat to the axis of resistance, so the present study seeks to answer the question of what was the strategy of the Islamic Republic of Iran against the ISIL terrorist group in West Asia? To examine this question in the context of defensive realism with a descriptive-analytical method and using the library sources of research findings shows that the emergence and rise of the ISIS terrorist group in Iran's neighborhood not only fears the disintegration of Iraq but also military capability and efforts to Infiltration into Iran is considered a security threat, so the strategy of national unity and maintaining the territorial integrity of Iraq and the fight against ISIS has been considered by Iran.
