The effect of applying the Orem self-care model on self-efficacy of hemodialysis patients: a clinical trial study
Self-efficacy in hemodialysis patients leads to more appropriate self-management of problems by these patients. Considering that the use of specific theories and models for self-care is one of the strategies that help these patients, the present study aimed to determine the effect of OREM self-care model on self-efficacy of hemodialysis patients.
The present study was conducted as a clinical trial on 150 hemodialysis patients in two experimental and control groups at Razi Educational-Medical Center in Rasht during 2015-2016. Data were collected using a three-part instrument that included a demographic and clinical information questionnaire, an instrument (CKD-SE), and an instrument (NKF-NUS) in two phases. Data were collected and collated after 4 weeks by a fellow researcher (without knowledge of the research design and the sample belonging to the groups). Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tests (paired and independent t-tests, chi-square, logistic regression).
The findings of the study showed a significant increase in the mean and standard deviation of the total score of self-efficacy and its domains in the experimental group in the post-intervention phase (P = 0.0001). Moreover, the results of the regression test showed the predictive power of the intervention for the self-efficacy score of the samples (CI: 49.30-38.78: 95%, OR = 123.72, p = 0.0001) by controlling the effect of each variable.
The results of this study show the positive effect of using the Orem self-care model on the self-efficacy level in hemodialysis patients. Therefore, nurses can increase the self-care capacity and self-efficacy of hemodialysis patients by applying the Orem self-care model.
