Preparation and Characterization of Alkyldithiocarbamte Ligands and Their Ni(II) Complexes

Abstract:
A septet series of monoalkyldithiocarbamte compounds of formula R–NHCSSNa (R = methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, hexyl, octyl, and nonyl) were synthesized via the reaction of corresponding amine, CS2, and NaOH with 1:1:1 molar ratios in acetone-water or acetone at 0 ºC. These compounds were characterized using spectroscopic methods including FT-IR, 1H NMR, UV-Vis, and nonspectroscopic methods such as elemental analysis, molar conductivity, and decomposition temperature measurements. From the reaction of each of these compounds with Ni(NO3)2·6H2O with 2:1 molar ratio in aqueous medium seven dithiocarbamte complexes were prepared. The synthesized complexes were also characterized by the above spectroscopic and nonspectroscopic methods. Based on the obtained results it can be proposed that each dithiocrbamte compound acts as a bidentate ligand and coordinate via its sulfur atoms to Ni2+ ion. The geometry around Ni2+ is square planar.
