Darwaza's Method in Interpreting Qurʾānic Stories and His Encounter with Historical Sources

Muhammad ʿIzza Darwaza is one of the contemporary Sunni commentators and the author of al-Tafsir al-Hadith; A course of complete interpretation of the Holy Qurʾān, which was created based on the tanzīlī method and in accordance with the order of revelation of the verses from the author's point of view, and contains different and noteworthy interpretations. A significant part of these different interpretation opinions have been represented in the explanation and commentary of the Qurʾānic stories. He has criticized the Qurʾānic stories in a different way from other commentators of the meaning, as well as many commentators' statements about the Qurʾānic stories. His method is based on a different way of using historical and hadith sources. In this study, while examining Darwaza's historical and Hadith sources, we are going to criticize them and explore his method of using these sources. The hypothesis of this study is that the main reason for distinguishing Darwaza's method from other commentators is his extensive use of historical sources related to the pre-Islamic period as well as Jewish religious sources, and his relatively less use of authentic sources among Muslims. Also, when referring to Hadith sources, most of the book Al-Tāj al-Jamʿi Lil ʾUsūl fī Aḥādīth al-Rasūl written by Manṣūr ʿAlī Nāṣif is used as the basis for the validation of the ḥadiths, only the Ṣiḥāh Khamsa hadiths mentioned in this book are considered as authentic traditions, and when quoting historical reports, they often only rely on interpretive sources. Finally, his most important criterion in criticizing the historical narratives and reports mentioned in various interpretations was to refer to the Qurʾān itself using innovative methods.
