Recognizing Social Indifference and Factors Affecting it (Case Study: Students of Islamic Azad University of Tehran)

Abstract:
Purpose

Social indifference as a moral concept and a sociological phenomenon means little interest or lack of belonging in the social life of people and the opposite of social participation, and the occurrence and prevalence of such a phenomenon in the young university generation can cause acute social problems. Therefore, addressing it in a region or a city can help clarify it. The aim of this research is to know the social indifference and the factors affecting it. The statistical population studied is the students of Islamic Azad University of Tehran.

Materials and Methods

380 of them were selected by stratified random sampling. Research method, survey and data collection tool is researcher-made questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis and content validity were used to measure the validity of the questionnaire, and Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to determine the reliability of the items. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software. Pearson's correlation coefficient statistical test and multiple regression analysis were used to evaluate the research model. In order to explain social indifference among students, variables such as individualism, idolatry of money, relative deprivation, reduction of social health, mistrust, meaninglessness and powerlessness were considered as independent variables (predictors) in this research.

Findings

The findings show that between the variables of individualism (0.265), idolatry of money (0.486), feeling of relative deprivation (0.432), reduction of social health (0.432), meaninglessness (0.267), Distrust (0.245) and powerlessness (0.397) have a direct and significant correlation with social indifference (P<0.01).

Conclusion

According to the stepwise multivariate regression analysis test, four variables of money idolatry with value (Beta=0.348), social health reduction (Beta=0.204), relative deprivation (Beta=0.215) and powerlessness (148) (Beta=0.0) remained in the regression model and these four variables predict 38% of students' social indifference changes.
