Knowledge Translation in Medical Education in Iran
The challenge of how to transfer knowledge to the field should be answered in knowledge translation, which includes the production, dissemination and application of knowledge. The integration of knowledge translation training in the medical curriculum can promise to improve care. In this study, we will examine the importance of knowledge translation training in medicine, review this process in the field of medical education in Iran and other countries, describe its implementation challenges, and finally provide strategies to create the capacity to implement it.
Valid sources in reliable domestic and international search databases between 2010 and 2022 were used in a narrative review. The searched keywords covered the 5 main stages recommended by the World Health Organization in 2004 (including: 1-what message, 2-to whom, 3-by who, 4-how, 5-with what effect).
There is no doubt that the educational system of medical sciences needs change, and there is a consensus that the current structure of education does not meet the growing needs of the general and medical society. The implementation of knowledge translation in health-related environments (both at the bedside and in education) is a complex and obstacle-filled process that requires preparation at individual, organizational and contextual levels.
It is recommended to use knowledge translation in curricula across disciplines and across the continuum of medical education. Also, the officials should evaluate medical training and care by choosing and applying at least one or two knowledge translation strategies at the organizational level and creating incentives at the individual level.
