Experimental Study of Biotreatment of Iran Antibiotic Factory Wastewater

Abstract:
Pharmaceutical industries with regard to their products, produce wastewaters with different characteristics which are treated using aerobic and anaerobic combination system. Antibiotics wastewaters due to the inhibitory effects of certain substance on acidogenics and methanogenic anaerobic bacteria cannot be well treated by conventional methods. In this study, a Plexy glass reactor with working volume of 40 liters equipped with aeration unit was designed and operated under Continuous activated sludge. The results of analysis showed that under special cycle of operation, the proposed system is able to remove 95% of influent COD.The effect of chemical pretreatment showed that 3 gr/lit lime or alum is able to remove 40% of organics materials in the wastewater. The effect of chemical post treatment showed that 0.5 gr/lit lime and 0.5 g/l alum is able to remove 68% of organics materials in the effluent wastewater. In this work biokinetic parameters like Ks, K and Kd which will be useful to design a activated sludge reactor are evaluated.
