Investigating Prevalence of Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma Infection in Pregnant Women with Preterm Labor

Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma are commonly identified in the vagina of healthy pregnant women. However, these microorganisms are usually isolated from the amniotic fluids of women in preterm labor. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma infection in women with preterm labor. This Cross- Sectional study was performed on 130 pregnant women referred to Shahid Beheshty Medical & Educational Institute of Isfahan. 65 pregnant women complaining of preterm labor in case group and 65 pregnant women with term labor were located in control group. In addition to personal characteristics and pregnancy outcomes, the studied variables included prevalence of Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma. P less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Due to term labor after treatment, 36 subjects were excluded from the case group and 29 subjects were included in final analysis. All subjects in control group were included in final analysis. Mycoplasma was identified in 11 (37.9%) women with preterm labor, and was more prevalent than in control group 4 (16.9%) (p=0.0003). Ureaplasma was present in 21 (72.4%) women in case group compare with 28 (43%) in controls that was statistically significant (p=0.01). There is a significant relation between preterm labor and Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma infection. Prevalence of these infections in preterm labor is more than in control group.
