Image of suicide in Hormozgan province, 2012

Suicide is one of the most important social and public health issues which affect not only the persons who attempted but also their families and community. World Health Organization estimated in 2000 about one million people has died by suicide. In many countries suicide is among main 10 reasons for mortality and one out of three causes of death for15-35 year old age group. This study was based on data which collected from surveillance system running all around the province in 2012. By using SPSS software version 19، demographic variables، method and result of suicide were analyzed and demonstrated. 712 suicide attempts happened in Hormozgan province in 2012. 451 cases (63. 3%) were female and 261 cases (36. 7%) were male. Most suicide attempts were in 15-34 year old age group which consist 89. 2% of all cases. Incidence of suicide was higher in summer. Drug poisoning was the main method of suicide (77. 7%)، afterward hanging (8. 8%) and poisoning (8. 3%) had high incidence. 9. 6% of men and 2. 4% of women who attempted suicide had died. According to these findings، suicide is an important problem especially for young people in Hormozgan province. Strengthening the surveillance system and planning to reduce the risk factors in society is necessary to control this problem.
