The Study of Police Authority from University Elites and Police Personnel Point of View

Police force as the most basic organ responsible for order and security in society is powerful when it can exercise authority without using physical power tools. Police authority is consisted of psychological and information dominance over criminals and crime-friendly environments to the extent that criminals always feel the presence of police and such feeling has become a significant deterrent in criminal acts. In this research it is attempted to answer the extent and type of police authority from elites and police personnel point of view. Therefore five type of charismatic، traditional، legal، coercive and elite authorities were appraised. The research is metric- descriptive and the researcher self made questionnaire which its reliability and validity confirmed was used. Research statistical population was consisted of two groups of elites and police personnel in Tehran. In elites group about 64 people randomly from among university professors in Tehran and especially from professors in Police University and imam Hossain University and managers and doctorate students in national defense higher university were randomly selected and from police personnel sample about 388 people from among employment personnel in police stations from intelligence and traffic police were randomly selected and studied. Research results indicated that legitimized indexes authority (73) traditional (69) charismatic (67) elites (64) and coercive (53) received the most credits respectively.
