The Causes of Scarcity of Collective Memories of Iran-Iraq's War in Informal Gatherings in Tehran

Message:
Abstract:
War is one of the most important historic identity-making events in each nation''s life after the end of which people strive for keeping its memories. The plurality and variety of narrators and their different viewpoints make several different narrations about war in a way that one can see the realistic image of war by only putting all these narrations. Yet، government men-with all facilities they possess-try to give a homogeneous، smooth story of war. In this process however، social reactions play a restricting role and consequently the government cannot develop the realistic image of war. As a result what becomes important in balancing the government narration، is local narration of ordinary people Yet، what can be seen in this field is just passiveness and immobility. The theoretical framework of this thesis refers to Halbwachs and Ricoure’s thoughts on collective memory and frameworks of remembrance and forgetting and its method is qualitative method and grounded theory Findings of this research suggest that some factors such as giving additional privilege، blaming soldiers for present problems of society، considering war as a sacred matter، avoiding show offs، indifference of the audience to the phenomenon of «war»، feeling uncomfortable when talking of war and lack of such talks in unofficial gatherings account for this shortage of war memories talks in these gatherings
