Effects of Temperature Change on the Behavior of Clayey Soils

The dependency of soil behavior to the temperature has been proved by many researches. It’s also known that due to the nature of surface forces and the role of water in clays, thermal effects are more intensive in clay than sandy soils. A review of the effects of temperature change on the properties of clays such as specific gravity, Atterberg limits, thermal conductivity, permeability, shear strength, volume and pore pressure changes in drained and un¬drained conditions is presented in this paper. It must be noted that, although sometimes contrasting results has been observed in various researches but the overall investigation of these works provides a more profound understanding of soils thermal properties for engineers.
