Investigation of Industrial Solid Waste Management in Rafsanjan During 2012: A Short Report Print

Uncontrolled disposal of dangerous industrial waste can cause irreversible environmental problems due to contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water. In order to avoid these problems, this study aimed to assess the functional elements in industrial solid waste management systems in active plants located in the industrial plants of Rafsanjan. A cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2012 to June 2012. Thirty eight industrial plants were active in the city of Rafsanjan. Information using a check list and field measurements were collected from industrial plants. Field measurements were used to determine the components of industrial waste. A 0.5 cubic meters barrel was used for sampling in the middle of every month. A total of 152 samples were collected and analyzed. The average weight of total waste produced were 5859±118. 13 kg per day. Hazardous waste included 18.63% of the total produced waste, of which 42% were flammable, 29% toxic, 21% corrosivity, %5 reactivity and %3 explosivity. The industrial waste minimization using the modified process was only performed in 5.24% of the plants. Hazardous waste management in the industrial plants of Rafsanjan is inefficient due to improper waste disposal. Therefore, education programs of the staff and managers of the plants followed by a comprehensive program to identify hazardous wastes in the industrial plants of Rafsanjan is essential.
